Squealing EMG

Hi. I've not been around these forums for ages, they sure look pretty 21st Century these days.

So yeah, I'm having a little trouble with an EMG and was hoping someone could help.
I bought a second hand 81 and put it in the bridge position of my Jackson soloist. The middle and neck positions I've just left empty.
The pickup itself seems like it's in good condition, but it came without the pots or input jack so I just wired it straight to the jack I had already and put a mini-toggle switch inline with the 9v power line to switch it on and off.

When it's plugged in and playing it works and sounds great, but the problem is that under high gain it squeals horribly. It only squeals when I'm not playing through it, but it happens the same at very low volumes and when I'm standing right away from the amp.

It stops if I turn the gain down to about half-way but, well that's not really why I bought an EMG, you know? :)

The only thing I can think to try is to get some 25k pots and install them.
Could this be the problem do you think?
I never use the controls at all - previously I had the guitar with just an Invader straight to the jack and it was great. - Would it make sense to just get a 25k resistor and put it where the volume pot should be?

Re: Squealing EMG

It sounds like standard, run of the mill feedback to me. It could be that the 81 is pushing out a frequency that your Invader didn't, and that frequency just happens to be one that's causing feedback. If it bothers you alot, I'd try adusting your EQ and/or investing in a noise gate.

Man thats weird cause EMGs are dead quiet compared to passives... I don't think I've ever had mine feedback unless i just hit an open note and let it ring forever. Like was said above you must have some weird resonance happening somewhere.

Re: Squealing EMG

Seriously?
If it was just a bit of ordinary feedback then wouldn't it go away at really low volumes, or when I'm over the other side of the room behind the amp?
Adjusting the EQ doesn't help either.

Mine are dead quiet too, but my amp kicks out gain hiss regardless. I've run into feedback issues on occasion.....including when I'm holding the strings down on both hands. I have no idea what causes it, and it's happened with high output passive pickups too. However, my problems have all revolved around volume....turning down the amps volume has always cleared things up for me.

I donno. Like I said above, turning down the amps volume has always cleared things up for me.....so I really don't have any other suggestions than to experiment with a noise gate.

Did you ground the bridge ? Using EMGs you shouldn´t ground the bridge.

Really? I didn't realise.
Yeah, I put a ground wire on the bridge when I had the passives - I'll go and take it off...
