Potting will give a more blunt and direct sound out of your pickups, while unpotted has that ringy undertone underneath the fundamental sound of the note. It's not a bad idea to pot them, which consists of heating parafin cooking wax in a pan, carefully submerging the pickup till the tiny bubbles stop coming up, then cooling it off on a few paper plates tossed in the fridge. Just be careful not to let the pickup sit on the hot pan bottom, so it doesn't melt any plastic.
Another cure, is to remove your pickguard, and put a bunch of electrical tape on and around the bottomside of the pickups, just to keep them from resonating and becoming microphonic. Try that first, then pot them if the problem isn't solved by the electrical tape trick.
