I have a BEAUTIFUL G&L ASAT Custom Semi Hollow with F-hole (tele). It a WONDERFUL guitar and the stock G&L pick-up's sound great too.Problem is when ever I run it through any kind of high-gain/distortion at anything like useable volume the lead pu squeels like the proverbial PIG,which is a shame because it sounds really good for both hi and lo gain set-ups....any suggestions????

Re: Squeeling ASAT

Semi hollows have this problem. I have a 335 as well as a thinline Tele with 2 HB. Both of these guitars can feed back or squeal if I am not careful.

There are a couple of things you can do. What is causing the feedback is the air bouncing around inside the guitar. You can stuff the "F" hole with foam and it will minimize this dramatically. I have seen photos of George Bensen with tape over the "F" holes on his hollow body.

The second and better choice is to wax dip the pups. In most cases the pickups have little bits of air that get caught and cause the pickup to becom micrphonic. Remove the Pickups and wax dip them it will definately minimize this problem.

If you have never done this yourself you may want to take the guitar to a tech. The pickups have to be removed and dipped in hot wax. Do a search here for wax potting.... you can also check th fax page and all the materials and how toos are here. Good Luck!

Potting will give a more blunt and direct sound out of your pickups, while unpotted has that ringy undertone underneath the fundamental sound of the note. It's not a bad idea to pot them, which consists of heating parafin cooking wax in a pan, carefully submerging the pickup till the tiny bubbles stop coming up, then cooling it off on a few paper plates tossed in the fridge. Just be careful not to let the pickup sit on the hot pan bottom, so it doesn't melt any plastic.

Another cure, is to remove your pickguard, and put a bunch of electrical tape on and around the bottomside of the pickups, just to keep them from resonating and becoming microphonic. Try that first, then pot them if the problem isn't solved by the electrical tape trick.
