Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

CTN

The Drama Dude
Dude offered me a trade for my Epi SG.

Cursory googling revealed some favourable reviews. Mostly I'm just curious if it's a well put-together thing with decent quality wood and good fretwork.

Also would like to know what kinda pickup routing is going on there cuz I'd most likely turn it into another H/S or H/H or maybe even a bridge fullsize humbucker and a neck mini humbucker instead of a single-sized.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

Which exact model?

I recall that some of the routing work was a little scrappy. (Splitting ash!) Also, some of the pickguard outlines and screw positions are slightly different from American, Japanese and recent Mexican instruments. Pickups were surprisingly good but not as much output as you might hope for.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

Not sure exactly what model but it is an SSS strat. Schaller style tuners but the trem has bent saddles. Ash body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard.

Don't really care much about the pickups since the whole pickguard would be replaced along with the godawful gold hardware

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I asked the guy if he could check out the routing. If it's already routed HSH, i might grab it.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I suspect that they are. I once worked on a Floyd Rose HSS model. HSH cavities. Slightly non-standard neck heel shape. Some of the drilling was out of square.

found the model#:

033-2900-x38 Pro Tone Stratocaster, RW Fretboard. Crimson red transparent, white shell pickguard, gold hardware
this is one of his pics

it looks to be in good shape. I'd probably do this with it:

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

When those were new I GASed hard for them with maple boards in that red, blue, and green.

Aight. gonna do it.

F**k. I'm going to have 3 strats.

At least this will be ash though.
And now I'll have an excuse to get a Perpetual Burn and a Screamin Demon.

That's a pretty nice looking strat as is. I get why you don't like it but I thought it would look worse.

Also, I lol'd at that cat.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I have never liked red guitars. candy/metallic reds are even worse.

but

Pros:
1) ash body (never played ash before)
2) great reputation for this series
3) HSH routing so less headache for me to turn it into something i will enjoy playing
4) looks pretty cool in my kisekae mockup, except for that goddamn sneaky cat.
5) it will only be the 2nd guitar in my arsenal that shows off its wood.

cons:
1) I would have to spend about $100 and however much for the pickups to get it to where I want it.

I don't think that's too bad for getting rid of a guitar I don't like and prefer not to play vs getting a guitar I would be much more likely to play. Hooooo boy, I'm not sure my other strats are going to like this flamboyant interloper. not at first anyway.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I just realized - if you're willing to go for the traditional three knob setup but with a 3 way toggle switch, I have one that you can have for shipping costs. Which would be combined if you bought my Screamin' Demon :smokin:

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

2 knobs, 3 way LP toggle, 2 series/split/parallel switches.

TBH I'm not in a position of buying gear right now, far too many other life expenses to deal with in the next couple of months. I'm thinking after all that crap is sorted out then maybe i can afford to start thinking about gear. If you haven't sold it by then, let's see if we can work something out.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

i think one easily get used to translucent crimson red and to the effect of gold hardware on red. Also the pro tone's well known for excellent intonation even after trem use, so you may want to discover the part at 1st and not rush things.
it definitely got HSH cuts. however, in case you don't like that pro tone, let me know and i'll buy it off of you (Montreal). imho it suits 60's, original studio recorded dark side of the moon, and late 80's floyd sound as is: thin sparkling pickups. also suits my beginner's skills.. thin neck. i even use it with thin 08 strings. regards, Sean

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

Translucent crimson red + gold hardware = Bordellocaster! Pro Tone is pretty, has good neck on the thinner and narrower side and great for modding platform. The fat tele and thinline that I've got were nicely built.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I dunno man, i hate gold hardware most of the time. so garish and unnecessary blingy.

How thin would you say the neck is? like Ibanez or Jackson thin?

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

I'm not familiar with Jackson neck profile (tried SLS at store years ago) but the Pro Tone tele neck is rounded, thin and narrow with 12" radius, definitely not like Ibanez. The rosewood/maple neck is thinner than all maple neck just like the case of Squier CVC tele to CV'50 tele. I don't know if this issue also occurs to the strat model though.

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

Yeah I don't mind a thin neck, as long as it's not like a toothpick. But 12" radius! oh man, I am instantly a lot happier with this trade! lol thanks for the info man, really appreciate it!

Re: Squier Pro Tone Strats (MIK) - any good?

i'm a newbie but maybe that helps: technically it plays like an old blade texas classic (the one with fat BLADE on the headstock), soundwise it's more sparkling than a 60es, maybe rather like a 70es strat?
