Squire guitar quality question.

How good is the grade of neck and body wood for Squire guitars? About 2 weeks ago I played one but I can't remember the model name. Maple neck, 2 P90 pickups, 3 way toggle, a big black pickguard and I think two volumes and two tones. The pots and toggle felt very cheap but the thing that amazed me was how comfortable and playable the neck was for such an inexpensive guitar. Really one of the better feeling necks I've ever tried. Offhand I thought it might make a good project guitar (new pickups and electronics) but again, I'd like to know if the neck and body woods are of any quality. Thanks.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

imo, the quality of squire is great. and amazing for the price. i have a standard squire strat and the neck wood is good. the playability is good, feel, tone, and most everything else. im not sure what kind of wood the body is but the maple of the neck and the rosewood are of good quality. my friend has an afinity series strat, and my other friend has an affinity p bass. both are just as good as my strat. the only problem was with the jack, but a new jack is not hard to come by.

its the squier tele custom, I tried one and I had the same impressions as you I was highly considering buying it as a backup guitar

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

All Squier's are not created equal. They range from Excellent's to Crap!
The early 80's JV,SQ and E series M.I.J. are consider the better of the
Line. After that it's hit or Miss? You gotta try it to know. One thing
for sure...Even the best Squier the stock PuP's gotta go. :D

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

Squire Tele Custom II. I have that guitar and for the $225, it's a great guitar! The body is poplar, sort of similar to Alder. It has duncan designed P-90's which according to Evan Skopp here are the same tone range as their vintage P-90's. Difference is that they don't have the traditional trappings of teh P-90 in their design. They sound good though. The only thing to watch for is the neck, because they can be inconsistent. Mine is as straigh and dead on as guitars I have that are 5 times the price.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

My boy's Squier Bullet is not very good quality. Its the lowest line one, but the body is a real cheap pressed wood-chip affair, and has no depth to the sound at all. The neck looks equally as cheap.

On the good side, it seems to play well, and the pups have that classic chimey "Strat" sound. Just no richness or depth to them.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

Squiers are excellent bang for your buck. Make sure you play a bunch of them, though.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

I have just brought a really nice MIJ 80's Squier for £100 off Ebay inc case, I must say I'm really impressed with the build quality.

I took it to my guitar tech today, a few people in the shop looked at me as if I was a looney as I'd parted company with cash for a Squier, I had a guy who'd got MIA strat in for setup take the mick out of me something rotten. But I took it on the chin as I how good it is and I've not had to for out £800+.

It needs a fret dress as the maple neck has shrunk a little with age and the frets are sticking out a bit at the sides but nothing major. Next thing on the agenda is a set of SD Californians!

So for less money than one of the modern chip board jobs made in china get your self a MIJ to have a play with, its great fun! :burnout:

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

My squier 51 is great quality from top to bottom, even has the skunk tail on the back of the neck.

Only iffy thing is the strings (Which after being broke in arent that bad) and the pots feel wiggley and cheap. Other than that, theres a few things they arent chromed, but big deal.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

Thanks for the help, guys. I can change the guts, no problem there. I just want to be sure of the woods quality. I'll be checking it out a bit further if I can make it back to the music store tomorrow.

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

Okay, I just read some reviews at Harmony Central. Yes, it's the Squier Tele Custom II, and the body is made of agathis. One guy refered to it as "budget mahogany." I've heard of this wood but thats about it. Any good?

Re: Squire guitar quality question.

Sorry... right Agathis! I was confusing it with something else. It's not really a substitute of say a LP Jr w/ P-90's. It is a bit brighter and springier than a Jr.
