Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

I had a pair of SM's in my Patriot for awhile. I had switches so that I could select any combination of coils at any time. Since SM's are made up of two singles, on a common frame, all the single-coil tones were killer. They had the chimey, jangle that you expect. The trouble was, in humbucker mode, they just sounded like two singles wired in series. It was "ok", but nothing special. I liked all my "true" humbuckers better. They weren't bad, in fact they had a nice clean sound to them. They just weren't "special".

The other problem was, I had them back at a time when I was changing pickups like changing underwear. I didn't give them a fair shake, and now I kinda wish I had one back.

I think a Stag Mag makes a great neck pickup in a 2-humbucker guitar, with split switches. But they need something beefier to complement them in the bridge. ;)

I bought Artie's if I remember correctly. I didnt personally like it. On paper it sounded like a great idea but, I found it to be a bit stale sounding! Lack luster at best in my opinion.

BTW, I tried it in a 1974 Ibanez Les Paul copy in the neck position!

So . . . you're the one I unloaded . . . er, I mean, sold that to. :D

Remember . . . that sale was "satisfaction gauranteed". I'd be happy to take it back. I thought it might be cool to physically split one into two separate singles. Just to see how it worked.

Got ya, I had it and someone made me the right offer for it a while back so I unloaded it, I mean sold it LOL!!!!!! . Sorry about that bro!

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

I was thinking . . . I bet a Stag Mag in the neck, paired with a Distortion bridge would be very cool. The Distortion and the SM both split so well, and the DD could supply the bottom end that the SM lacks.

Hmmm . . . I may have to get another. ;)

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

I have a SM in the neck position and I like it. It's not your "normal" bucker sound, but that's fine with me. And it DOES split well. I use it in bucker mode, in split mode with a middle single, and in bucker mode OOP with a custom SK dualtone bridge bucker. Works for me.

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

Youngpup had an overwound Stagmag bridge made at UGD. I've only spent about 10 minutes playing it, but thought it was quite nice. Split it's pure strat singlecoil tone and bridged I thought it was closer to a very hot P90 tone. But that's very subjective. I'll see if I can get YP to post some more detailed info on his set up(Custom SM bridge/ standard SM bridge in neck position in an Electra LP copy). YP's been pretty busy riding his cows......if you know what I mean......J/K!

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

I've never heard the Stag Mag, except for in humbucker mode in the samples on this site. If anyone has any sound clips, please share. I'm curious as to what they sound like.

I'm here because I just posted a similar thread about the Stag Mag, and Artie directed me here. I asked if it really sounded like a single coil. But, I had another question and wondered if anyone here would be able to tell me anything. Here goes.

Does it sound the same or at all similar to split mode when wired in parallel with the coils out of phase? A lot of players seem to think that it does with traditional humbuckers, but since this isn't a traditional humbucker, I think it'd be hard to say without listening. Just curious if anyone would be able to give me some insight.

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

I think the "compromise" tone with the SM is the humbucker mode. If you want single coil when split, plus another, bigger sound then maybe try it? I'm thinking about it as well as a few of the Rio Grande offerings for the neck of a Strat.

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

Is there any particular model single coil that anyone would say that the Stag Mag is most comparable to? When split, I mean.

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

It struck me as being very similar to an SSL-1, which is odd because the SSL-1 uses A5 mags and the SM uses A2. Could be the close proximity of the other "set" gives it A5 power.

That is quite odd. Never heard of an Alnico II sounding like an Alnico V. What do you mean by "the close proximity of the other 'set'"? Sorry, kinda new to the world of replacement pickups, and though I've spent a lot of time doing my research, I'm still lacking in comprehension of some industry terms. Heh.

Also, is it because it has two rows of pole pieces that it sounds like a humbucker instead of a stacked single coil? Maybe Seymour should think about putting a third dummy coil to create hum cancelation when in split coil mode. Just a possibility...

of course, for us goofballs who hear a difference between the two coils (and would thus use an on-off-on minitoggle to be able to select EITHER coil), he'd need two dummy coils :D

You mean a dummy coil for hum cancelling for the outside coil, and another for the inside coil, right?

Re: stag mag users, testify please !! :)

Wait. Wouldn't the use of two "dummy" coils just make it a humbucker consisting of two stacked single coil-sized humbuckers? o_O?

yeah, it would .. which i kinda why i was poking fun (at myself) ... i tend to go overboard with hot rodding the switching of coils on my axes :D
