starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

Will do guys. I know what I am after as far as looks go. Figuring out the best way to achieve it ....well thats where Research research research comes in. I want a vintage vibe going. I was originally going to use Zinsser's amber shellac. I realize now this has wax and some claim it could have issues with anything over it. However I have read that Nitro works. I am considering at this point using a clear zinsser's seal coat with the amber over it. I dont mind if it wears quickly as it will just add to the relic aged look im want. :)

That's a fine stable of guitars you're putting together.
The Strat's all class but this Tele is schmick!

I love the tele in your profile shot !!

Beautiful. I love seeing guitars made out of nontraditional woods. I want to build an oak (body/neck/& fretboard) Les Paul, but I'd have to chamber the hell out of it lol.

while waiting for the neck and pickguard to come in I decided to go ahead and do the wiring. I want to get everything lined up and the pickguard screws drilled before going forward with finishing the body. I am afraid if I finish it first then drill the pickguard holes the finish may crack. I must say this soldering job went alot smoother than the first. I used the diagram from seymour duncan. the diagrams from fender were slightly different as to where the cap was placed? Not sure what the difference would be. Fender has it tying into the volume pot from the tone pot.

Nice soldering. Very neat, just don't ever look at mine. So many switches and wires it is a B!TCH to get my tele control plate on.

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

I tried to make it as neat as I could. my first wiring job wasnt quiet as neat. :)

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

IMG_1282.jpgIMG_1283.jpg Got the pickguard in today. Thought Id take a couple mock up shots to see what its gonna look like. Hoping the neck will be here tomorrow so I can drill the holes for the pickguard and start the finishing process. I believe Im gonna use tru oil as the finish for the neck.

I had one myself but I hated the neck radius. With this build Im going for the same look but with a different vibe.

IMG_1295.jpgIMG_1298.jpg Did the sander sealer coats tonight. Made the flame come out nice.

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

i wish my second solder job was that tidy!
tasteful selections, if you don't mind me saying so

so how exactly did you decide to finish it?

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

As of right now it has four coats of zinsser clear sealer shellac sprayed on. My plan was to put some coats of amber shellac over the sealer but im thinking of leaving it natural. Then nitro over as a final finish.

I'm really loving the vintage looking amber finish.
A tortoise shell pickguard would really set if off.
So, has the neck arrived yet?

Re: starting a new build: Pine body telecaster with a curly maple top

4th coat c.jpgNo should be here tomorrow. I was tired of waiting lol. I have black pickguard but I may try a tort shell to see how it looks. In the meantime here is a shot after everything dried and I got the orange peel sanded off.
