Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

I first started listening to steely dan when i was 13, and that's who really got me into playing guitar. Each solo or musical bit in their songs tell a story on their own, building catchy motifs over various chord changes.
My personal favorite is Kid Charlemagne, and for a more bluesey touch, reeling in the years.

i love steely dan, such great musicianship without being overly technical and still very catchy.
too bad not much people know of them...

..or at least in my age group :D

steely dan was way before my time, but i still grew up on their songs. What i really love about their tunes is that, not only are they cool to listen to, but since they're real creative and dynamic they're fun as hell to play. I never get tired of playing reeling in the years, and it tends to impress people, not because it's a fast tune, but cause it sounds so good.

I always liked the crying baby solo in Hatian Divorce, perfect. ;)
Kid Charlemagne is another favorite

yep artie!!

reelin in the years is also a great song w/ an awesome solo.

cool thing is that they all fit perfectly, nothing really abstract and it just fits the mood.

Realin in the Years
Peg

I saw Jeff baxter with the Doobie Brothers, eons ago. He was incredible.. Pat Simmons is no slouch either.

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

Kid Charlemagne is #1 to me but I like everything off "The Royal Scam".

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

"Kid Charlemagne"

Larry Carlton+Steely Dan=Amazing!

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

Most of their tunes....way too many to list, but my personal favorite is "Deacon Blues". Not necessarily the guitar, just the song as a whole.

There's a guy that pops in every now & then, Scott Lerner, that plays some killer Steely Dan. Do a search on the forum for him....good stuff!!!

***EDIT...I just did a search & it appears the Steely Dan clip was removed. You can check Scott's music out @ www.scottlernermusic.com though & get a pretty good idea of how good it was. :13:

The intro guitar solo for "dont take me alive" is short but rips!

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

i know this is a tad off topic, but what's baxter's best doobie brother's song, in your opinion...

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

The one that starts out with the heavily distorted arpeggio followed by several bends.
I can't remember which song it is and I can't put my hands on the CD. I think it's on Royal Scam.

Don't let 'em foul ya. Getting old is a bitch! :banghead:

Anyway, that's killer stuff. :headbang:

Now what was I saying?

Re: Steely Dan Solos-which is your favorite?

"Don't Take Me Alive," that's it. I think.
Anyway, I love that song.

Peg, Kid C., Do it Again, Haitan Divorce.

I also like the Larry Carlton solo's on Donald Fagen's Nitefly (don't know if it counts).

For me, Steeley Dan is the full-meal deal. You've got great playing, great subject matter in the lyrics, and great grooves.

Play the solo from Kid Charlemagne in a guitar store and see what happens. I think that you'll be amazed by the response, even from the young guys who've never heard it before.

The tones and solos from Haitian Divorce are way cool, too.

I love the guys who can play through the chord changes.
