I am interested in having the ability to control the amount of volume coming from my combo amp vs. an extension cab but am a bit confused here... Is there any way for the amp separate the 'external speaker' output vs the speaker in the combo? Basically I want to use a pedal like the EB volume/pan to be able to switch from the built in speaker to the extension cab. Do I need a whole separate amp to do this? How does stereo operation work?

You'd need a separate power amp to get stereo operation. There are devices that will allow you to (safely) switch between two cabs but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would let you pan between them without separate power amps.

Any reccomendations on these devices you refer to? I was thinking about getting a gmajor, would this have that ability?

Also, is it possible for me to play through both simultaneously, then using one of these devices switch to just the extension cab?

Oh yeah, and considering I have a combo amp will it still let me input to the amp with outputting to the speaker in it?

What are you trying to do? Are you looking for stereo FX with unaffected signal coming out of the combo or are you trying to do something else?

you might remember a previous post I did concerning a 'homemade leslie' rotating speaker... I talked the idea over with my brother, who is an electronics geek and he showed me how it could be done.... He is adept at making circuits, etc. and said that this would not be very difficult (electronically or mechanically). So I am wondering how to make it work from this perspective.

I want to use this 1x12 extension cab expand the sound of my amp, not just as an effect. So if i could have them play simultaneously, then switch to JUST the cab (to intensify the effect) that would be basically as good as having a pan pedal do it. What I want to know is if I can do this as-is, or if I will actually have to mess around with the electronics of the amp, putting in a switch to block the output to the built-in speaker as needed or what. Or if there are aftermarket products that can do this.

I am a firm believer in the "don't mess with amp post tranny" school of thinking. Power soaks are ok but other than that I hesitate to mess with anything that will risk cooking the tranny.

In order to get true stereo you need two seperate signal paths, both in the preamp and power amp. Without that you end up with dual mono. Many effects processors will sum the signal if only one input is used.

If you inserted the G Major post tranny (speaker outs) you'll cook it and possibly your output tranny as well. This is not a good idea.

The Leslie thing post tranny will only be possible by using a device that doesn't change your output impedance. What you would need is a dual attenuator type of device where the center position is 50% output on both sides and the output of the sides is inverersely related. (one side increases in volume when the other is decreased).

But this will not make stereo, just dual mono with panning.

If you want stereo, buy a stereo guitar rig.

You can't get stereo operation just by adding another speaker cabinet. And you have to be very careful with the voltage rating on any switch inserted between the speaker and output of the amp because the amp will burn up the contacts of something like the switch in most A/B type pedals.

Easiest way for me to play in stereo is to use a stereo effects pedal (like the Boss Stereo Digital Delay or Stereo Reverb or Stereo Chorus) and plug each output into two separate combo amps.

I like to play in stereo through a pair of Deluxe Reverb or 5E3 Deluxe or similar amps.

You'd be best off buying a separate amp for your Leslie and using something like an Ernie Ball panning volume pedal placed before both amps.

Or, you could invest in a power amp and run your effects loop send into an EB panning volume, then one side back into your current amps effects return and the other side into the power amp (which powers the Leslie).
