Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I always thought that the Sex Pistols just all took a dump on a pizza pan, compressed it, drew grooves in it and sold it as Nevermind The Bullocks.

All righty then, as Frankly would say.....

Thank you.

I'm not a Pistols fan either. Well, most specifically, I'm not a Sid Vicious fan at all.

There wasn't alot to like about Sid Vicious really...but he made the whole concept of watching someones life sink into an abyss a spectator sport.

I believe it was Malcom McLaren that called him a "fabulous disaster."

I enjoy Sids performances for the same reasons I like watching "Intervention" on the A and E Channel....the ability to stand back and say "Wow...I thought I was kinda messed....now that's someone who is REALLY messed up. I feel SO much better about my lot in life now!"

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Don't even get me started on Sid's contribution (or total lack off) to the Sex Pistols.

I want to echo Wattage on the Classic Albums DVD. Buy it now, and thank us later.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Really? That was me being NICE about the Pistols. My mom likes them, I have plenty of other friends that like punk and like the Sex Pistols, however, there are planty other punks (one owns Nevermind the Bollucks on vinyl, what a waste of a 12"), who like me realize that when Sid Vicious said "You just pick a chord, go twang and you've got music" that he probably didn't even know what a chord was, and certainly never played any on his bass. Sorry, this is just a reflection of my opinion, and to everyone who likes the Pistols, continue to do so and ignore my comments. But if you want a British punk band that were good musicians and really moved the youth of Generation X, listen to The Clash!

EDIT: I shot the shariff, cause I thought that it was sid vicious, oh yeah oh!
How dare those basterds steal gear from Bob Marley, he was a musical and lyrical genius, not to mention a conneseur in marijauna!! =)

Sid had nothing to do with the Sex Pistols sound, or the recording of the album.

I understand the hatred toward those who think he (Sid) had some sort of contribution, but don't let that diminish what is a landmark recording.

Perhaps you should give it another listen.

I've had that album around my ears since I was 7. I use to like them, cause I hadn't heard a lot of other punk bands, but they sound like a TERRIBLE rip off of The Ramones. Besides The Clash, The Damned, U2 (yes I realize they're only punk album was Boy), and The Buzz****s are prime examples of GOOD British punk. Besides, I think to the SP punk was about getting wasted, acting like a **** to everyone and dressing to a certain standard, which is what I've always seen jocks as. I've always seen punk as pormoting positive change, opening minds and not giving into the conformity of fads, trends and fashion, Though punks may have their own fashion, you don't have to have green liberty spikes or a leather jacket etc to be a punk.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I always saw the Pistols as an English hard rock band from the late '70s who were popular with punk rock audiences and had the punk rock look...

You might not realise it, but some folks are reluctant to read preachy stuff about "open minds" etc, along with a slanted opinion-fest diatribe. Each to his own. We're talkin bout the Pistols here, let guys worship for a bit, man.

Nevermind the bollocks was an album that spoke to alot of folks, long ago. From where you are now, this might be hard to understand. Ignoring the band and their output, look at how much change they brought in and how many bands formed from it. It gave kids a sense of "no chops needed"

And ironically, Steve Jones shat on a gold record award. So pizza no.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Great timing on the thread. I just had a punk all dayer at work. Stiff Little Fingers headlined, Conflict, Agent Orange, Goldblade were all fantastic too. A day with 3000 drunk punks is always an eye opener, yesterday was no exception. I had some great chats over the bar about the state of the world, the music industry and good beer.

A big +1 to those other British punk bands Fender_Punk mentioned, The Damned being a personal favourite. I saw them last year, and they are still brillant live.

Not liking the Sex Pistols is fine.

But to not comprehend their historical importance is ignorant.

They were as integral to punk as any other band you mentioned, if not possibly more.

Whether they were "good" or not is a debate for the academics. But to write them off and their historical importance in the realm of punk is akin to writing off Robert Johnson in the world of Blues.

And despite what you might believe punk to be I think you're a little too well rooted in what it has been perverted into from the past ten years.

Punk was never intended as a vehicle for change, that was the hippy-music it acted as the counter-point to. It wasn't out there to be liked, to be danced to or to be a unifying movement for the world.

Don't like the Pistols fine....but they deserve as much cred as any other band that you listed, and possible more.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I'm not saying they had a huge effect, I'm saying that their huge effect wasn't that great of a contribution to punk, other than to its fashion and the snotty, rebel-without-a-cause attitude.

As for Punk rock becoming a hippy-vehicle, it always was. The Clash were always political and held many "hippy" ideals. The Ramones even had some political songs. One of the things punk is known most for is it's political consciousness. DK, Black Flag, The Clash, Propagandhi, DOA, NOFX, Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, Rancid, The Jam, Gang Of Four, the list goes on. It's hard to think of more than 10 punk bands that weren't political at some point or another.

I'm not saying you're songs have to be political to be punk, but politics is a significant topic to the lyrics of punk rock. Anyway, I'm done bashing the Pistols, I don't care if others like them, I don't.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

What happened to my thread! Haha..I don't care if you like them or not..Just curious about what amp/OD he used. From pics and stuff, it's obvious he's using a Fender Twin..Now i'm curious about what he used as an overdrive..Anybody have a clue?

The difference is these bands had a few political songs with political lyrics that did nothing, whereas the pistol shocked and shook up the whole establishment. Whenever the sex pistols are mentioned people ignore the music and tell the storys, this pistols went far beyond music, so far beyond that the music is almost irrelevent.
