Re: Steve Vai At His Best

first time I heard that ditty. His playing plain gives me goosebumps.

Going to have to get my tickets for his September show in Portland on Friday.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

At the time Stevie Ray and the blues was huge and Vai is taking a swing at something more bluesy.

Its actually really good and his sound is his best IMHO.

Its his take at saying " hey look i have a soul too!" Lol

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Same here. He's an astonishing player, but I don't listen to him at all (though I nearly wore out my copy of Passion & Warfare when it was first released).

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Yeah, i have to agree there. he is an astonishing player. well put.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

i think his live stuff is better than his albums, and would agree with passion and warfare bit too. that was legendary and i still like to hear it every now and then.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Vai is amazing... probably my favorite "virtuoso" guitarist. He gets so into it and regardless of how fast he plays, he does it with feeling and soul.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Live, i've said it ever since i joined here, he is a total god. He owns the guitar, commands it, weeps with it, has orgasms with it...he really is incredible. Even his tone live is a million thousand six hundred four trillion times more amazing. I'm gonna correct myself though. Steve Vai isn't a god, Steve Vai is Steve Vai, and sometimes the line between which is better gets blurred.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Tender Surrender is one of his finest solo bits, just such a soulful bit of playing.
I do love Vai but so much of his stuff is a bit pants. Passion and Warfare is up there in my top twenty albums, as is Eat em and smile with Dave Lee Roth, but so much of his stuff leaves me a little cold.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Just to add it's a pity Vai is such a control freak, the original Dave Lee Roth band could have been so much better if they'd managed to keep that vibe they had with the first album, ah well :)

Well I don't know the detail on why that line up split, but I agree those two albums are just plain simply fantastic! Yankee Rose and Ladies night in BF are just rippage. Most people would want to kill me here after this but DLR wrote better stuff with Vai than he did with EVH ...
