Again, here's Steve demoing this pedal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWUhFLy9J94

I'm really liking it! You can set up one side for bluesy overdrive and the other side for anything from bluesy overdrive to molten modern super saturated overdrive.

And if you have a one channel vintage style amp like a blackface or tweed Fender or Marshall plexi, the Jemini will sort of turn it into a three channel amp with channel switching.

But the revelation I got yesterday when my buddy AJ came by to check it out is that with a guitar with paf style humbuckers or hotter, the "Green" channel on the Jemini excels at getting that tone Eric Clapton got with the Bluesbreakers or Cream.

I've been playing through my blackface Princeton Reverb mostly but the "Green" channel just nails that late 60's/early 70's British Blues tone of a Les Paul into a Marshall.

The "Red" channel moves you into more modern tones: Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Satriani, etc.

Has anyone else seriously checked this baby out? It's a GREAT pedal, IMO. Very versatile!

To me, it combines the best qualities of modded TS-9 and DS-1 pedals. But with more transparency and less of that "chrome umbrella" that the the TS-9 puts on my guitar tone.

To me the TS-9 or 808 has this compressed quality to it that sounds a bit metallic. It's a very smooth metallic quality but it's there. Like having a chrome umbrella over my tone which will only let it expand or swell so far and then it squashes the tone.

I've never liked that about the TS-9 and it's the biggest reason I've always preferred the DS-1.

The Jemini doesn't sound exactly like either. But it does seem to capture some of the best qualities of both the TS-9 and DS-1 - plus do it's own thing.

It's like vintage Clapton on one side and Steve Vai on the other!

Just when I thought I'd found my distortion pedal...
I stopped looking when I bought my Metal Muff and now I've gotta try one of these!...guess I'll start saving my pennies.
Can you use both sides togather or is it one or the other? Lately I've been stacking an OD with my MM for different flavors but i'd rather have "one" pedal that'll do what i want for dirt,.. sounds like this one might.
Thanks to your review, I'm gonna give it a try....
This is why i love this place,... I would probably not have gotten past the paint job to even consider it.

No - can't use both pedals on at the same time.

It's kinda pointless to use both sides together anyway since the "red" channel is capable of so much overdrive anyway.

The "red" channel can do the bluesy overdrive tones of the "green" channel - but the "red" channel can go way beyond that and really go over the top with the saturated super distorted tones if that's what you're looking for.

But it doesn't get muddy or so compressed that it starts to sound generic.

The tones always have a lot of texture to them and you can play chords without the chords turning to out of tune dis-chordant muck.

Also, you can use your guitar's volume control to clean it up.

doesn't matter,...

I'm gonna try it soon. I'm a dirt junky for sure and I'm always looking for the next OD to try,..don't know if I can get past that paint job though.

Have you used a Keeley DS-1, how does that compare to the red channel? Similar, better, worse?

I have a MIJ Boss Ds-1 that has never been modded. When I compared it to my Keeley modded DS-1 with the Seeing Eye mod I sold the Keeley modded DS-1.

But I have not heard Keeley's more recent mods to the DS-1.

I don't hear the DS-1 as being a Distortion pedal. I like it best for overdriving a vintage amp...not for creating saturated distortion tones.

The Red channel in the Jemini seems to have more gain and distortion capability than a stock DS-1.

lol, I love the fact he can laugh at himself. "you're a wanker steve.." "so they say.."

Re: Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal - further observations!

Screw it, if GC has one I'm buying it this weekend.

Re: Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal - further observations!

I still haven't seen one yet, and it's because they sell as soon as the store gets them.
It seems like they're a hit.

Re: Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal - further observations!

I'm dying for one of those Jeminis!

2 channels on my amp isn't enough. The Jemini would give me so many tonal options on the spot... plus such a review from someone as trusty as Lew is a huge, huge plus.

Re: Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal - further observations!

I wish I could take it out from under my foot long enough to send you my King of Tone...the wy you describe the Jemini is prtty much the same way I describe the KoT...like the best TS808 EVER w/o any of the issues and the best DS1 ever w/o any issues but it let's you run one or the other or both in any set up you choose plus it also adds a clean boost that IMO stomps a Klon in the dirt!

Maybe one day I can do w/o it long enough for a Lew shootout!

Im glad you're digging it...It must be special because you never really get excited about dirtboxes...

I might have to hit up my local Ibanez dealer and try one...sounds like fun!

Re: Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal - further observations!

I just ordered one. I love a dirty TS-9 spanking the input section of my Bandmaster and I'm thinking the Jemini will do that job in addition to having more gain available. I'm wondering how it will stack up beside my Fulltone GT-500, which is a little different beast. I'll let y'all know.
