Steve Vai on a Fender Supersonic?

Re: Steve Vai on a Fender Supersonic?

yeah.. it's just an amp man. there's a video of him playing a virtually clean marshall somewhere on the internet, giving a clinic. THAT is much more impressive. it's like steve vai on a clean sound for 10 minutes or something.

bone dry clean.

I see some VHT(Fryette) heads in there too. Hey, and you gotta love that sweet violin player. She's hot.
13/8! Yeah, I'd say there's some jazz fusion influence in there. A little prog rock too.
Now mind you, Rush can write a song in 13/8 and have memorable hooks, hummable melodies, and guitar riffs that go on to become classics in the genre. But Vai takes 13/8, and his band sounds very cool grooving in that time sig, and he uses it as a vehicle for amazing improvisational exploration.

Re: Steve Vai on a Fender Supersonic?

read an interview with Vai once where he had to get a real strat to record a part... in it he said he walked into a guitar store with $3000 in his pocket looking to buy a good one... after spending hours going thru all the strats in the shop he found what he was looking for in a $500 MIM strat!!! LOL

that interview was from the early-mid 90's
I've read that interview. Every Strat has its own unique voice.

I saw him play at the Roseland in Portland October 6th. The very first show that he ever played in support of his first solo album was at the The Roseland Theater, and October was the 32nd (if I remember correctly) anniversary of him playing with Zapa. It was absolutely amazing! My wife even loved it. We were no more that 12' from him the entire time. I'm not sure who had more fun...Him or the crowd! He had a gal playing a harp that was strapped to her. She was running around the stage with it and it had rope lights on it. The whole band was great. He played a tune with a kid that was about 9 years old. He had one of those little Ibanezes. It was great. Met Vai at a meet and greet before the show. He signed the album and got some pics. He was very nice. One of my favorite vids is the one for Bad Horsey.
