Strat hardtail on a tele

So, I don't know if I like my bridge pup on my telecaster and I have a JB/Jazz just layin around doin nothing. I think I am starting to figure out I am not a single coil guy unless they are on a strat. Sorry about constantly asking things about my Tele I am just not 100% happy with it. If I change it over the humbuckers I would like to do use a hardtail and a mounting ring, kinda like the American HH models. Are there any hardtail models similar to my tele bridge as far as mounting screws etc.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

well, now that I think about it, My MIM is set up for a tele pickup and if I route the bridge pickup for a Humbucker with a mounting ring I am pretty sure the hole will be way too big and I really dont have the experience with metal cutting or the tools to cut the bridge. Am I right here

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Or, if you don't want to route, just get a Tele-sized humbucker, like the Little '59 for Tele, and I think there's a couple DiMarzios that are Tele-sized.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Yeah, It was more or less I have a JB and Jazz just laying around and I Love those pickups. They just have no home and I am not 100% satisfied with my teles tone. I love the neck Pickup and I have a hotstack in the bridge right now and it just isnt enough. My next guitar will be some kind of Strat or GL legacy soo ill have my single coils then. Its sad when I am home play on my lil bros squier affinity strat and think the tone better suits my taste than anything on my MIM tele. I love the way teles look I guess they just aren't for me.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

If it's more than the sound of the Tele you don't like, sell it and get something else. If you like how it feels and just need to get the sound tweaked, well, then swap away. If you have access to a router or someone who can do it right, then go for it. The JB/Jazz would be great in a Tele (think Tele-Gib). Stick with 250k pots, which I think are what's in Seymour's Tele-Gib.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Go for the Tele bridge plate routed for the bucker, like the one linked to above.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Yeah I read about 250k pots with the JB and Jazz so i would just try the stock pots before changing. I love playing my tele I am just not impressed with the tone. I will be able to rout the guitar myself. I enjoy working with wood (haha) so that is no big deal and have tools for the job.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

i've been thinking of making a tele with a strat hardtail bridge myself. But a modern string spaced hardtail, not the wide strat ones.... i don't like the thinner tone of the standard Gotoh tele bridge meant for full sized humbuckers... it locates the bridge bucker too close to the saddles... at least with a hardtail bridge i could move the bucker....

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

I like the idea of a HT Strat bridge, I'd play around with one except my Tele modding days are pretty much over. I love my JB/Jazz in the Tele-Gib. Just chop a Tele bridge like Seymour did and do some minor routing. 250K pots.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

I installed a Strat trem without the trem block and used that for awhile. I had my Fred w/mounting ring. See my avatar. The only thing I had to route was for the humbucker legs where the screws and springs connect to the mounting ring. It wasn't very hard. The mounting screws for the bridge, however, didn't mount in the same place as the Tele's did. It's not a big deal. And it's not a very hard job.

Chris, how much closer to the saddles is the humbucker versus a Strat hardtail? If either one was put on the same Tele, wouldn't the pickup be the same distance? It certainly doesn't look like it's too close in the photos. In fact, it looks further away than what butnut did (see his photo).

well when i messured the location of the Humbucker from the 21st fret on my tele/strat bastard thing with a Gotoh Tele Bridge with a Humbucker slot... and did the same on my American Standard Strat that i love, there is a difference of 3/16th's of an inch. and that is enough of a space in that area to cut back on the low end tone... in that area of the strings a small amount like that makes a difference..

I love this guitar, its my inspiration for the project but I really do not have the experience working with metal or the tools to do the job. I love your Guitar by the way. I think I am going to just go with the humbucker bridge from warmoth.

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Oh yeah, I think I have the poplar version of the MIM which is Ok but there is alot about the guitar in general I do not like. Such as the Vintage frets, I think the paint job doesnt allow it resonate very well. Its an ok guitar and but I do not want to put too much work or money into it. I have the JB and the Jazz in a squier strat that has alot of fretware and a Floyd Rose. Anywho I am getting more into strats so I am gonna turn this MIM work horse into a Tele-Gib the easiest way possible and save for a MIA or G&L

I have a 1999 MIM Standard Tele... stock except the bridge was changed to a modern Gotoh as the past owner had a 3 barrel bridge with straight saddles and i could not jell with it out of tune..

anyways that cheap used tele sustians and vibrates like crazy!!!! it has the same thick finnish... it has to be the wood.... i'm sure a thick finnish is not always the best for sustian, but this tele is wild...

and ya i hate the vintage frets as well.... but i live with it as it is such a live wire of an axe and i don't want to mess with it and wreck the way it works....

Re: Strat hardtail on a tele

Yeah mine does look sick maple neck black body with Black/White/Black pickguard. with a hotstack in the bridge. The sustain is decent but I dont think it compares to some other MIA teles Ive played. I do keep going back and forth with routing it because I am pretty sure once I do there is no going back. Ill be shelling money out for a new bridge anywho maybe I should try a Humbucker sized single coil....
