So I saved up all my pennies and want to get a new guitar. Here are my current options. Feel free to chime in if you have other ideas.

I have never liked strats but I played an American Deluxe (HSS) the other day and it was super nice. I only got to play it on a Fender amp so I have no clue as to how it would sound through an amp with distortion, mainly my DSL. It was very comfortable to play and looked nice with a tri-burst.

The other is an SG standard in black. Not much to say about this one. I just like them. The thin body kinda bothers me but its not a deal killer.

I dont want to spend more than a 1000 (possibly a little more) for you guys that will offer suggestions and the guitar must have a substantial neck. I can't get into thin shred type necks.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

fender...........much more versatile especially with the bridge humbucker it beats the sg easily

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

I have both guitars, and I love them both equally. But if you play any type of blues, then I'd say go for the strat.

If you're only playing rock type stuff, both are going to sound killer through your DSL...so just go by whichever feels best to you.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

personally id choose a strat, i just prefer them over SGs. Also i see a Gibson but i cant see a Fender on your gear list :)

Good point :)

Can single coils rock or are they thin sounding? I'm thinking a blues axe and rock axe may be the ticket.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

I would go with a strat. If You already have Gibsons Than why not get a strat? IMHO
everyone should have a Strat in their arsenal.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

id get an sg, but since you have a fairly new les paul if i remember correctly (a damn nice one too), id swtich stuff up and go with the strat. then you can have both staple guitars of the music industry

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

Strats can sound fat if you know how to work them. You could also slot in some overwound single coils if you want to beef up the sound a bit but keep the strat character.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

Even though I have and love my Hamer guitars and Gibsons, Fenders, PRS and the rest of my stuff.

I think a good Strat or even a Tele should be the next guitar for you as the SG may just be a bit more of the same that you have.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

those are both great guitars - but very different
maple bolt-on neck compared to mahogany set neck
if your interested, I could build you a hand made guitar that might be more of what you want. Otherwise, i'd go SG, personally

Cheers

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

I'd go with the SG....but of course, I might be biased since I already own one.
Personally, I couldn't get a good fat sound out of my Iron Maiden Strat thru my DSL. Ironic I know since Maiden runs straights thru Marshalls and they've got a BIG sound.

I didn't care for the heel on the Strat. Really surprised to see after all these years the best they've come up with is a Lego block heel. The SG also has a nice snarl that the Les Paul doesn't have.

The Tele Norman_T mentioned was a nice alternative also.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

I'd go for a strat. (Or maybe warmoth me a custom one)
Yes strats can sound fat. I have 2 overwound single coils and when you put them in series they produce 16k output - very fat humbucking tone.

Re: Strat or SG? Help with new axe

J,

I voted for the Strat, because I think that'll be different to the guitars you have already. If you like the feel of a Strat and the volume knob doesn't skin your knuckles go for it!

I'm looking for an SG, because I love 'em and I don't currently have one. Great sound, easy to play, great top fret access, a bit fragile but you just have to look after them. Wish I'd never sold my old '74 Standard. But I'm looking for a 61 RI rather than a Standard, as I'd rather have '57 Classics and the small pickguard.

You know we can't make this decision for you, don't you? ;)

What the Hell, there's always a next time! :saeek:
