Strat players, Vintage or Modern tuners?

Re: Strat players, Vintage or Modern tuners?

Split shaft tuners are my preferred tuner. By far the easiest and fastest string changes.

I like nice lightweight modern ones that lock, which isn't easy to find.

I really like the vintage split ones as well. I prefer them to the non-locking modern style ones.

I'm fine with either so long as they stay in tune.

Doesn't really make much difference to me. All have their advantages and disadvantages. The vintage (and modern) split-shaft "Fender"/Kluson/Schaller, et. al., actually lock the string to the tuner, if wound properly. Locking tuners should be faster to change a string.

There are usually a myriad of factors that affect tuning stability. Tuner failure is often at the bottom of the list.

I love the trim, classy look of the old-style tuners. And now that they are available from Gotoh with locking mechanisms and/or post height adjustability, they are pretty much modernized in all the ways that count, without having to accept the less attractive looks and weight of most modern-style sealed tuners.

I won't bother converting a modern headstock to accept old-style tuners, but if I'm spec'ing out a neck from Musikraft or wherever, I order it with the old-style 11/16" holes, and get Gotoh vintage style Mag-Lok H.A.P.s.

If I am improving the tuners on a modern-style headstock that has the bigger holes, I usually get sealed Hipshots with the butterbeans, or Sperzels with the optional small #6 buttons.

The modern-featured Gotoh vintage versions go on new builds only. I don't swap out stock Klusons on my Fenders for locking, height-adjustable ones. I just use them, because they are fine. I do, however, use a standard self locking string wrap on them, though, even though they are slotted and center drilled.
