Strat players...

Re: Strat players...

I play a 1991 G&L Legacy with alnicos in the neck and middle, and a JB jnr in the bridge.

Great guitar - was much better than the strats I tried close to it in price.

Still want to get a Tyler or Suhr or Grosh or Melancon sometime though...

Re: Strat players...

Warmoth Strat...alder body in an olympic white finish, routed for a two point tremolo. Neck is goncalo with an ebony fretboard, CBS peghead, jumbo stainless steel frets, 1 11/16 Earvana nut, Schaller locking tuners, L.R. Baggs X-Bridge piezo pickup system. Pickups are a Lace 6k Hot Gold in the bridge, Bill Lawrence L-280S in the middle, and a Kinman AVN-62 in the neck. Wired using the 50's mod with master volume, master tone, and piezo preamp control. The volume and tone controls are Dimarzio audio taper push/pulls...one of them turns the bridge pickup on when pulled up, which allows all possible pickup combinations. The other puts the bridge and neck pickups in series when pulled up. The electronics route and pickguard are fully shielded with copper foil and everything is wired using star grounding.

the guy who invented said:
WHAT...you mean Lew's favorite Strat is not a full fledge Fender! I for one am shocked!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Well....I do have my old '63 sunburst that's 100% stock except for medium jumbo frets. Looks like SRV's but not quite as beat. It was my #1 for years and years...it's on its third set of frets and I wore the first and second set out myself.

Bought it about 1975 in Detroit, so I've owned it about 30 years. Great guitar. But I like modern pickups like the Antiquitys and Fralins better than the old ones...I don't like the weak bridge pickup in vintage Strat pickups sets.

I've had hotter bridge pickups in it, like the JB JR., but these days its back to stock again. I might put an Antiquity Custom Bridge pickup in it though...I think those are my favorite Strat bridge pickups these days.

Re: Strat players...

I have several strats

my favorite player is a '94 G & L Legacy, stock

my favorite tone is a recent Warmoth strat with APS flats neck & mid/ SSL-3 bridge

I did a recent Warmoth strat with a Clapton neck, vintage style hardware and Custom Shop pickups by MJ -very nice tone and playability

my current project is my nod to a 50th anniversary strat - lightweight ash body, vintage blonde finish; one piece maple neck, vintage specs; Callaham hardware; pickups will be SSLs with a hotter bridge (T'Banger or Hot)

Re: Strat players...

My strats are:

1993 Fender Strat Plus with Seymour Duncan Antiquity Texas Hots (mid and neck) with Antiquity Custom bridge pup, master TBX Tone control, and a EMG Afterburner 20dB Booster. The neck is mid thickness and is quite wide (have no idea what shape!).

Unknown brand 70s (so I'm told, possibly made in Japan) Strat (which I stripped the black paint off of to reveal the bare wood), the body is made up of combinations of Mahogany and Ash with a Oil and Wax finish applied ontop. Pups are JB Jr (b), Quarter Pound (m) and a Lil 59 (n). I'm also thinking of replacing the Vintage tremolo bridge with something like a Wilkinson or a Gotoh at some point. The neck is quite thick and isn't as wide as the neck on my other Strat (again I don't know what the shape is!).

Re: Strat players...

I have two...

'95 MIM Std. Strat - Fiesta red with a rosewood fretboard. It's had a wide variety of Duncans in it and now sports a trio of Classic Stacks. It's also got Sperzels on it and has gone thru one refret. My first real electric guitar, all broken in nicely, lotsa sentimental value, etc...

'92 MIA Floyd Rose Classic Strat - bought it used about 2.5 yrs ago, came stock with HH pickups config (stock was DH-1s, they're PAF Pros now) and a real Floyd Rose tremolo. It's grogeous. Brazilian rosewood board, satin neck finish with a vintage tint, and a voluptuous shade of Candy Apple Red to set it off. Sounds awesome!

Re: Strat players...

1988 Torino red Eric Clapton Signature Strat. Bought used in 2000. Was mint enough to still have the candy in the case. This was the guitar I always wanted growing up. It's very finicky as far as sounding good with certain amps.

2002 MIM Sunburst with maple fretboard. Loved the pickups but needed something higher output so the whole pickguard was replaced with one loaded with a Fender 54/62 in the neck and Van Zandts in the middle and bridge. This one just spoke to me when I picked it up. Huge neck on it. Always sounds good. I'm almost superstitious about moving things around on it.

1973 Strat. Rescued out of a closet in the South End for $150; original pickups and refinished in wood tone. Got a re-fret and re-wind on the bridge (it was dead). Didn't care for the sound of the re-wind much so I put a Cool Rails in there. Problem solved. Thin neck, big tone. Definetley my number one for a Single Strat night. New pickup makes it even more versatile; purists cringe.

Re: Strat players...

I have 2 Eric Clapton Strats. Completley Stock except for graphite saddles. ONE Metal Flake green, the other is black
I have a 57 RI Strat. I have replaced the neck with a Warmouth Rosewood FB, I have replaced the saddles with Graphite, as well as the nut to use the wammy more effectively, and I have replaced the PUPS with Fender TEX MEX PUPS. Love my Strats!!!!

Re: Strat players...

MIJ 62RI from 1992. Red with mint pickguard, thick slab fingerboard, vintage style tuners, frets, and bridge. I set the bridge to float about 1/8" and it stays in tune like a rock, even when divebombing. For pickups, I have an old Seymour Duncan/Musicman Albert Lee set with 5 way switching, and tone pots on the neck and bridge pickups. the middle one has volume only.

Re: Strat players...

I'm always buying and selling American Std's and American Series strats. Since they all basically play the same, I just pick them for their color, and slap a good pickguard loaded with my favorite pickups in them. I also change out the G,B,E saddles for graphtechs, and leave the metal ones on the E,A,D. If I get tired of it, I sell it for more than I paid, and buy another one. I keep my 2 favorite strats and use them, but I'm always grabbing a new one cheap, playing it, then selling it. It's actually quite fun, and cost you nothing, since you always sell it to buy another. I don't get attached since American strats are a dime a dozen.
