Strat saved by Alnico 2 Pros

Another boring "Seymour Duncan pickups are great" post?
Yes it is, and I apologize, but I need to give credit where credit is due. I readily voice my negative experiences, so I decided that success stories deserve an equal voice.
I spent weeks visiting every music store within 100 miles of my home in an irrational quest of tracking down a factory-fresh sunburst US Strat with a maple fretboard. I finally found one that felt and sounded like "the one". You know, the weird sensation of instant familiarity with a strange instrument? I cannot explain it, but during the next few months the guitar's sound changed dramatically. It progressively assumed a bright, shrill, brittle tone. I couldn't as much as fret a note without the clanking sound of metal-on-metal shooting through my amp. Bass response had all but disappeared into a hollow void, almost as if the alder and maple woods of this guitar had transformed into some annoying metal alloy, it was truly that bad. On he bright side (pun intended), I was now the proud owner of a monster surf guitar. Repeated setups didn't help and a set of Fender "Fat Fifties" made the problem even worse.
I own an Ernie Ball "Albert Lee Signature" guitar that is as smooth, yet spanky as can be and I discovered that it sports some SD APS-2's and a Twangbanger. Long story short, I replicated this setup in a last ditch attempt to save my beloved icepick-to-the-forehead Strat from the scrap heap (or eBay).
Mission accomplished. SD's description of the tone of these pickups is extremely accurate, and I am glad I didn't give up on this guitar. She has real musical character now. Thank you, Seymour.

I have bought many brand new guitars, but I have never experienced such a dramatic change in tone before. Has anybody else?

Re: Strat saved by Alnico 2 Pros

I can "testify". I had an ESP LTD model with ESP LH-100 pickups (the mystery pickup that no one has specs for, until now.

Anyways, they had good treble, but no mids or lows, and were slightly muddy. Swapping out to Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded (Jazz+JB) setup was a small miracle of a difference in tone. The ESP guitar came with 500k pots, so all I had to do was really replace the capacitor (because the value wasn't written on it, just to be safe). Wow, what a difference!

Re: Strat saved by Alnico 2 Pros

I've used the Twangbanger with both APS-1's and APS-2's. Currently I have the APS-1/Twangbanger set up. Either are two of my very favorite Strat pickup sets and I've had at least one of my Strats with that combo for several years now. You're right: great tone! If you've got a guitar that needs more highs go for the APS-1/TB...if you've got a guitar that sounds to bright go for the APS-2/TB. Only Duncan Singles I like better are the Antiquities...the Texas Hot Ant is kind of like a Custom Shop version of APS-1.

I have a strat with APS-2s and an SSL-3 in the bridge. It's the best tone of any of my strats.

Good pickups make a hell of a difference. I have a custom-made guitar that I'm always changing pickups in (click the "some of my favourite..." link in my sig and go to Kobrle-Jantar). Well, I believe I'm done finally. I've had the guitar for 5+ years now and I tried many a pup setup in it. Here's the story: Gibby 496/500T; Gibby 496/498T; Gibby 496/Duncan Custom (actually that combo was pretty good, but I couldn't stand the 496R split, remember Terry Jones saying WOOEEEEGH after Graham Chapman says "Have you got anything without spam in it?" in that infamoust Monty Python spam sketch); Pearly Gates set (pretty cool, but too thin when split, and I wanted some single coil grit in it); APH II set (an otherwise great set that I've used to a great success, but too polite with this particular guit); '59 set; Gibby 490R/490T set (again, nice but polite, and the split tones were weak); PGn/JB set; ahem ... Gibby 496/498T hurrrh arrrgh herrrrrh no thank you NO again; Pearly Gates Neck / JB! Woohoo! Here I go again! Why didn't I keep 'em in in the first place? Anyway, this time I won't get fooled again.

Props where props are due. Too many people are being negative about too many things. Let's point out some positive stuff!

Thank y'all at SD(

Tony
