Strat/Tele contours questions

I wonder about the comfort contours that can be made on Fender bodies, the tummy cut and the arm contour. These contours are standard on strats but if those contours are being made on a Tele will the Tele be more "strat-like" in tone and feel? Will the conturs in any way shape the sound of the instrument for a more straty feel?

I also wonder about the thickness on Fender bodies, is there a difference in the thickness on the strat and tele, i get the feeling that Teles are more sturdy, heavy and thick size wise, true?

Oh and also, what is more hip - Burgundy Mist or Lake Placid Blue on a Fender body (not matching headstock) with a white pickguard?

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

lake placid blue w/ matching headstock and Blue tortoise pickgaurd FTW!

as for the arm/tummy cut I don't notice anything different with my tele...of course it's Black Korina bodied...so there's a Huge difference right there:P

good luck tho bro!

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

the bodys are the same thickness as far as i know. a big part of the tonal difference is the single cutaway.

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

I think the difference in bridges alone makes up most of the difference.

LPB, rosewood, white pearl...:fing2:

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

On a Tele, I'd rather have LPB.

As far as the contours, I don't think they make a huge difference. I think that the trem and double cut construction on a strat make up most of the strat tone.

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

I think tone wise there are more significant factors such as trem bridge vs. hard tail, pup placement. I don't think the contours contribute that much if anything.

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

I'll offer an alternate opinion, and say that EVERY little thing affects the tone somewhat, but I agree with jeremy that the single cut makes more of a difference, and others who point out the bridge design, as well as the way the pickups were wound.

the strat contours were made for comfort, after feedback from players who tested early teles, and strat prototypes.

body thickness did vary a little, BTW ... some early teles were slightly thinner, around 1 - 9/16". USA Custom Guitars cuts their bodies with "Old School" routs a little thinner for that reason.

another fact I like to mention is that not all early teles had 7.25" radius necks -- there were a number that had 9.5" radius necks, or compound 7.25/ 9.5" radius necks, and this was NOT from refretting, at least according to the Blackguard book.

Re: Strat/Tele contours questions

Dunno about the tone, but for me I highly prefer Strat bodies that don't have these cuts.

The ellbow cut repositions my arm so that my right hand ends up over the neck pickup instead of between the pickups. That's like humping a leg instead of, errr never mind.

Guitars like the EMBB Steve Morse follow that and aren't cut.
