Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

stock to stock, i have an easier time getting a good sound out of my tele...

strat is more comfy though

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

I like the lead pickup of a Tele better than the lead pickup of a Strat.

So I use a Tele lead pickup in my favorite Strat.

I like the neck pickup of a Strat better than the neck pickup of a Tele.

But I like the combined tone of a Tele neck and bridge pickup better than the combined tone of a Strat neck and Strat bridge pickup.

This.

You know, I'd almost love Telecasters more if Fender made one that was a double cut. Single cut guitars I always seem to fight, but I dig the simplified layout and the tone of Telecasters. It'd be cool to see some kind of bastardized Tele-Strat thing. Something with the Telecaster type bridge and lead pickup, double cut body shape (ala strat), Tele type controls and Nocaster U-Shaped neck and Strat middle and neck pickups. I think that kind of a mix would be phenomenal.

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

I'm late to the party, but...

Strats for me - but I'm tending to play clean more these days - but ran my Tele though my Mark IV last week. Must say - it's the best dirty/distortion tone I've had in a while.

Probably ideal for me would be a tapped Tele pickup in a Strat and a 4 pole 5 way switch to tap on the bridge/middle.

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

Strats, for ergonomics. They don't dig in my ribs, have a forearm contour, virbato system, the volume knob is in the right place, and the 5 way switch is angled the right way.

I prefer corners. The major problem I have with Strat-alikes is that my right hand moves too much towards the neck, playing on top of the neck pickup, where Les Pauls and Teles position it correctly.

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

Strats with regular pickups have a sorta dreamy and piano like sound to me on clean or with modulation,

I prefer a Telecaster, (more wood, string through body) raw and muscular sounding,

Tele tends to be described as 'twangy', 'snarling' and 'biting' on the bridge pickup and 'warm' and 'smooth' on the neck. 'Jangly' in the middle position.

Strats tend to be described as sounding 'woody', 'hollow', 'quacky', chimey, glassy, 'smokey'...and with regards to the bridge pickup, Bright !!!

If guitars have a Gender, or can be compared to a Person

Tele = Handsome, Hardworking, Rugged Man

Strat = a Beautiful Woman

PRS = A refined high society Man / Woman

SG = ?

Les Paul = Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009) — known as an American jazz and country guitarist, songwriter and inventor. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar :D

While the arguments for the strat's playability are good, this isn't aboot feel. It's about sounds.
I will revise my initial statement:

I prefer Tele sounds over strats, but I cannot deny that if given the choice between a good Tele or a good Strat, I'd probably go strat. god knows I love the Tele sound, but strat sounds are just more versatile.

^to continue your Gendering,
SG = a curvy woman with amazing tone (who gets the reference)

Flying V = an energetic young man

Gibson Corvus = bastard child that never should see the light of day.

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

Ibanez Superstrats = Warriors, Ninjas,

A Black SG = Hero ( The Dark Knight )

Strats == Elves.

Teles == Dwarves.

Les Pauls == Gondorians.

SGs == Bree folk (men and hobbits)

PRSes == Rohirrin

Soloists == Istari

RGs == Rangers

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

The Tele has a beautifully punchy and twangy bridge pickup.

The Strat on the other hand, has great sounding neck and middle (yes I do like the middle) and the notch positions are great.

The Tele tends to have really comfortable chunky necks.

The Strat has ridiculously well designed, comfortable contours and cutaways.

The Tele (or even better, the Esquire) just looks bad ass. It's a plain slab with two (or one) pickups and as is simple as it gets.

The Strat looks like a spaceship. A really sexy spaceship.

I know you only asked about the tones, but I have to answer with another question...

Why would you ask me to choose between a redhead and a brunette?

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

Hi guys,

Which do you like better

Stratocaster Tone or Telecaster Tone

Cleans

Overdrive

Distortion

Thanks.

I like them both. Teles are suited for certain things, as well as Strats are suited for certain things. I think all players have to have one of each!

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

I don't really get the 'strats/teles sound thin' statements. They sound like what you make them sound like, they're guitars. They require a player, an amp, and possibly some effects or after market pickups. If they sound weak to you, then you can probably solve that by changing something along the chain.

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

I like both, but I have a slight preference for Tele's over Strat's. I voted Tele!

Look like a G&L not a Telecaster to me!

I took the OP to refer to a collection of typical Strat tones versus a collection of typical Tele tones. On Animals, David Gilmour still sounds like David Gilmour, even when he's playing a Tele. I think the OP means "Considering the classic Strat tones and the classic Tele tones, which do you prefer?"

Re: Stratocaster Tone vs Telecaster Tone

Wow, there are a lot of great and interesting thoughts here. I have tried, throughout my guitar playing life, to like Strats. I can't take the contours and the volume knob placement though. The only "real" reason I even like Strats is for the 2/4 quack positions. I get that with a Strat pickup in my Tele's middle position. It's not exact, but close enough. I also agree with the Tolkien analogy; very "right-on".

From my perception, and it's just that - my perception, when I go see a band or take part in an open mic/jam and I see a player with a Strat, the thought that, most-often, goes through my mind is, "Okay we have a Strat because the guy wants the guitar to do the work." In the same situation, when I see a player with a Telecaster, I think, "Okay, this is either going to be really good or really bad". That's because his/her fingers will need to do the work. I have other thoughts about players with other guitar makes/models; but we're discussing Teles and Strats here.

To me, there has never been a better bridge pickup made, than the Telecaster bridge pickup. The Tele neck pickup was invented to fill a marketing need; that's all. There have been major improvements regarding the Tele neck pickup; but to me, the original with a nickel-silver cover has a warm sweetness to it that's hard to beat.

Sheesh - I am talking myself into a Nocaster for sure....
