Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Probably a poor example, but didn't Hammett use a cream ESP 400 series for awhile w/ EMG SA's in it?

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Yeah, I knew I've seen Kirk w/ a Strat before. IIRC, he used to use Vintage strats in the studio a lot as well.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I've got most of my greatest metal tones with a strat with a low output true single coil. Generally considered I'd think that it's silly to say a guitar can't do metal - it's more that an amp can't do metal. And most of those amps that aren't generally considered as metal amps can do it very very well with a suitable dirt pedal in front.

Seriously, you guys who think a Strat with vintage output singles won't do metal, plug one into a high gain amp like a Soldano SLO100, Dual Recto, Bogner Uberschall or the like, tweak the knobs a bit, and listen.

I agree with everything you said, and really think that "this piece of gear won't do this" is more often user error than anything to do with the equipment.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I am now going to record some metal riffs through a typical vintage setup.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Even John 5's Teles have either Hot Rails or a really hot full-size humbucker. And yeah, Root's guitars are mahogany and loaded with EMG 81/60.

Heh, I ain't disputing that.

A heavy amp and a 6 string guitar with low output single coils will still sound heavier than an 8 string put through a JC-120 (clean of course, no amp modelers/pedals in it).

Sure enough, it still wont sound as heavy as a humbucking super strat beast... but both sound heavier.. one just a tad heavier;)

I just hate the god**** hum and noise when using high gain to try and get metal tones from low output single coil pickups:laugh2:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

If anything, record one guitar part with a bucker loaded guitar, double track with a single coil guitar, and it can sound mean as hell.

yeah. i was watching a bunch of paul gilbert videos the other day, and he was doing a bunch of sabbath & priest covers with a danelectro. and it sounded pretty good, too

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Deal, that's what I was doing.

arent you the same guy who insists a Twin Reverb can also do metal?
Quote me on this forevermore.
1) a stock strat cannot do metal in the smost strict definiton of metal
2) a 335 cannot do metal ( or at the very least SHOULD not do metal)
A Fender Amp CANNOT do metal ( pedals or no).

Get the right tools , come back and lets talk. Good on ya for tryin to make do..but you cant pay with the big dogs untill you are on the same porch( so to speak)
if you point to one artist who pulled it off, I would say that 50 more pulled it off more successefully with the right tools.
Thank you.

I don't remember insisting anything. I once made a thread in tips and clips with a Twin doing exactly that... Metal in the most strict definition of metal.

Turned out pretty good.

For your information I have plenty of guitars and amps at my disposal, many that are within the leagues of the 'porch dogs'.

But we'll see. Does a stock strat cut it as a metal guitar?

I reckon a stock strat can do metal.
You just need to use excess amounts of threshold on the noise gate to cut down the noise to bearable levels, lol!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

if a good metal player picks up a strat and plays metal on it through a metal-capable amp, you will hear metal.

it's playing technique and the amp, unfortunately most young metal fans underestimate the importance of both, in my experience of playing in bands...

Precisely!

By the way, I've done the clip. I just improvised some stuff.

No-one said I couldn't use a 4x12 though :P

incorrect on that one (and i can hardly believe it myself)...

i played through a fender once that sounded great for metal. no idea what model it was, but it was badass. all i remember is that you could switch the wattage on it between like 3 things

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Might have been the same one I have, you can go from 25watt to 130watt or thereabouts.
