Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

for the 10 thousandth time, a strat cannot do metal, if by "metal" you mean high-gain and black, death, nu and other exteme metal.
Strats w/ stock and overwound pickups can do heavey metal up to and through the 80's .
Heck, a gibson les paul sg or explorer or v isnt really even a metal guitar either they are too traditional..and cause a metal guitar has to *look* metal.its has to look like a jackson, esp, high end ibanez or some tripped out humbucker equipped transmogrified gibson style axe.
If you arent hooked up with a true metal guitar, you may be playing metal allright, but it aint gonna fly; your gonna look like a dweeb..

Jerry. You have absolutely no clue about the attitudes of the sort of people that play this music you seem to be spewing expert BS on. I've played in, and played with, numerous of the heaviest kinds of bands. No one in these scenes gives a rats arse what guitar you use, if you bring the heavy on a Hello Kitty strat then fair flippn play to ya. Most of us got over all that image crap in the 80s.

The thing is, the "image crap" never went away;)

Finally... someone who knows things. I remember TwinReverb or something made a thread about all metal players being gear elitists or something ahahaha.
I'm not sure, what's the metal scene like up in Finland?

i wouldnt say all but a lot of the ones i know are

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Well you're hanging around with the wrong ones then.

yeah its mainly people i went to school with but i havnt had much exposure to the musicians around here since i moved so i don't know about vermont but melbourne is pretty bad.

i don't know if i'd count as that, im pretty picky about gear (especially guitars since it's hard to come by something that feels good enough in my hands to play[its really hard to find something comfortable i mean]) maybe not elitist but definitely picky. although im not exclusively a metal player since i play jazz more than metal now.

most of the ones were like
"YOU DONT HAVE AN ESP/LTD GUITAR YOU'RE NOT METAL"

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Shoudn't we just re-name this thread "Jerryjg can't do metal with a Strat" ?

:D

Well if Strats and Teles cant do metal, we're effed....

FTR the solo on Screaming For A Love Bite from Accepts Metal Heart album is a Thinline Tele into a Distortion+ into a 2203... Sounds plenty of heavy :) ;)

I never gave a darn about if my Strat belonged in metal or not... Fact is I recorded music with a s-s-s Strat that was every bit as heavy sounding, as it was through various Les Pauls we recorded with.

Yngwie is a perfect example of someone who is VERY heavy sounding with a Strat :)

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

And if those recordings weren't done with Strats then it's off topic anyway.

KIRK HAMMETT!!!!

Kirk Hammet's best stuff was recorded with a Gibson Flying V. I know he used Strats, but most of his recorded stuff is with a Gibson Flying V- or the ESP copy of it

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Kirk Hammet is terrible, who cares what he plays?

'Heavy metal' was first used to describe a Jimi Hendrix concert in a British newspaper ("...sounded like heavy metal falling out of the sky...")

no offence Rich T., but im not talking bout the kind of 80's metal one plays on barney guitars. With all due respect, you aint gonna get the full face melting and frontal lobotomy on a jag-stang that you will with a freakin' invader equipped guitar that looks..well, like a cross between a SG and a V for example. Thats metal, and bully for you that you play hard rock with a Fender, but I want some **** air movin-ya know,..like g forces that make your jowls flap.Well..not "your " jowls..you probably don't have jowls yet...I mean "my" jowls!

Jerry, I know what heavy is when I hear it. It doesn't matter what guitar it is played on. I don't play 'hard rock' either. Jesus, this is like arguing with my grandmother about the benefits of the internet.

LOLZ. its true jerry, only the most disillusioned of radio "metal" dudes believe you cant use gibsons or fenders. find anyone relevant with a good rep in the metal world and you'll find that they likely use traditionally rock amps and guitars

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Talk to any good musician and they'll tell you it's not the gear, it's the player.

any limitations you experience are YOUR limitations.
