Strings?

What brand of strings are your thing? I've always used D'Addario 9s, but wondering if I should look over the fence...

Re: Strings?

I used to use mostly D´Addario XL Nickel wounds, 10-46 and 11-56. Although I recently tried Ernie Ball regular slinkys, and really liked them. I´m not too picky about the strings, as long as they are nickel wound.

Re: Strings?

Ernie Ball Super Slinky .009's for my blues guitars, GHS Boomers .009's for everything else.

Re: Strings?

The only strings I get along with (and I've tried a lot) are D'Addario XL's (10-46) and GHS Coated Boomers (10-46).

All other types of strings have something off about them whether it's sonically or in feel IME. Sometimes 'old standards' are the best.

Re: Strings?

For the last few years I've used Fender Super Bullets on my G&L guitars with the DF Vibrato. I think the bullet end helps with tuning stability, as advertised. I've also used the Stainless and Pure Nickel Original Bullets, but I always seem to come back to the Super Bullets. 9-42 gauge.

On the other guitars; my Les Pauls, 335s, Ibanez, Music Man Sabres, and DanElectro 12-strings--everything is D'Addario XL nickel coated steel. Gauges vary from 9-42, 9-46, and 10-46. Over the years, I've used a lot of different strings, Peavey, EB Slinkys, GHS, Gibson, La Bella, Fender, Black Diamond, Elixir, ad infinitum...and it's the D'Addarios that have been the most consistent for me. They are inexpensive, and are usually available at most mom and pop music stores in Podunkville. I like their environmental packaging, and they stay fresh in the packaging for a LONG time. With a little bit of care, they'll stay lively until I need to replace them due to fret wear.

My acoustics get D'addario J-Series or EXP, but I have had had great luck using Martin SP and SP Lifetime, too. All Phosphor Bronze.

Re: Strings?

Depends on the guitar, but almost always D'Addario. 10's on most of my guitars, though sometimes if I've been playing a lot and my hands are feeling a bit weak I'll go to 9's. I use 11's on my semi-hollow guitars, as they are all Gibson scale and I only really play jazz on them so bending is a little less important.

I have one proper 'jazz box' which is a full hollow with flatwound 12s on it, that I only use for trad jazz, though it's been so long since I've played straight up traditional jazz that I'm tempted to string it up with 11s too when I move back to Canada.

Strings?

Nothing but DR Black Beauties 9-46 right now.

I like the tension, the feel of the coated strings and the badass black color. I just play rock, punk, etc...

Re: Strings?

Depends. I like DR's drop tuning set, the 11-54 for my drop C# PRS. The seven string Chapman gets an Ernie Ball skinny top/heavy bottom set, 10-62 for drop A#. The strat gets Daadario 10s.

Re: Strings?

Ernie Balls 10 - 46 in classic Rock n Roll (pure nickel wound), Cobalts and M-Steels, depending on which guitar I using them on. Most of my FR equipped guitars are getting Cobalts (have been experimenting with M-Steels on a couple of them). Classic R n R sets go on my PRS Hollowbody 1 and my Firebird.

Re: Strings?

Dunlop Heavy Core 11-50. Recently gave my lead player a set as he'd been using a 9-46 and I restrung the guitar and set it up. He says he loves the feel and the sound of them. He said he'd been using Elixer Nanowebs since he started playing.

Re: Strings?

I like both Fender original bullets 10-46 and Earnie Ball Reg Slinky 10-46. I recently read on one of these threads about someone really liking DR strings so I ordered some Pure Blues and Black Beauties, both 10-46, to see how they are. Next string change will be fun. Probably not a spiritual experience but a new one nonetheless.

Re: Strings?

Currently using:

Gibson Vintage (10-46) on my LP and SG
Bright Wires (10-46) on my Explorer

Re: Strings?

Played Ernie Ball super slinkies for the longest time, but this last year I switched to GHS Boomers as I prefer the tone and feel of the bass strings better. Have played gauges from 9s thru 11s but currently play 9s for all my guitars. To me the string gauge is about the feel, which then affects the tone because it impacts how you play, use vibrato and bend notes.

Re: Strings?

Dr. Hi-Voltage 10-46, at the time they are some of the best i've tried, their lief is head to head with coated strings, i also like how they bite on my fingers, givin' really nice control over them, also they help nailing that texan crunch (or at least thats what my ears percieve)
