King Midas to Cheap Guitars
So spent a few minutes today wiping off the green lacquer (and silver primer coat, and the original red base coat) with paper towels and lacquer thinner. Found what appears to be MDF veneer on the front and back.
The good? There might be some decent grain on some of the pieces of wood:

Well, maybe the piece towards the top. The bottom pieces might look odd.
The bad? I was trying to determine the least worst way of removing it. Heating it up and scraping it off, and hoping not to gouge or burn the wood underneath... or sanding through it and making a huge mess.
The other bad? The electronics cover appears to be routed into the veneer, so it will probably protrude a little bit once the veneer is removed.
