such thing as a series box?

I've got a friend who has a stereo combo amp that has two 50 watt amps pushing an 8 ohm 12-inch speaker each... He wants to run the combo along with an 8 ohm 4x12 cab, with all 6 speakers blazing.. each of the 50 watt amps are rated at 8 ohms so I'm guessing the best way to go about this is to connect the 4x12 cab to one amp and wire the two speakers of the combo in series and connect to the other amp.. This would result in a correct impedance match for the 4x12 cab and a mismatch (8 ohms into 16 ohms) for the combo speakers

I know there are simple adapters which will take two phono plugs and convert them into one lead, but these run the two outputs in parallel.. I believe it to be true that it is better to have 8 ohms running into 16 ohms rather than 8 ohms running into a 4 ohm load with solid state amps.. are there "series boxes" or adapters for sale that take two leads and put them in series?.. It'd be much better if the combo wouldn't have to be opened up and have the speakers rewired in series (because he's not ALWAYS going to be playing with a 4x12 cab)
