suggest an all-tube amp

hey guys i currently play a 5 watt valve jr head into the matching cab. its my first tube amp and i love it. My only concern is the headroom. volume is fine because i can always mic the amp but i need more clean headroom but still be able to crank it without killing someone.

i want an all tube amp, probably solid state recto, with enough headroom for my livewire metal pickup. it still needs to be relatively low wattage though, and i'm a college student so i cant drop like 1000 on a head.

This could seriously present some problems.

Peavey Classics are good affordable tube amps, as are Traynors. The Classics seem to be modelled at least in part after Fenders, and the Traynors seem to have a bit of Marshall vibe.

i understand the livewire is a problem at lower wattages, but i dont need a pristine clean tone. in fact, i have no use for a really clean tone. i'm better off with really warm to slightly dirty

plus i have a passive equipped guitar too

Thing is, I don't think you'll be getting a pristine clean tone with any amp when you feed it with a Livewire Metal. I would suggest a MesaBoogie F30, used, off Ebay. It is 22 watts, and has a great clean channel, and is a loud mofo for being only 22 watts. This should work well with the Livewire Metal and won't break the bank.

yeah i think a mesa would work great for my style (precision metal playing to crunchy rock playing and then all the way to blues solos)

i'll deff look out for an f30, but how does its tone compare to other amps? does it have the typical mesa tone? i might be better off with british tone now that i think about it

If the Mesa tone you are thinking about is like the Rectifiers and the Mark amps, then no, the F30 does not have it. The typical Mesa tone comes from the 6L6 tubes; the F30 has EL84s, which are similar to EL34s.

uhm, the first clip is an F-50, which has a good clean channel, but does have the typical Mesa 6L6 tubes.

Crate v3112T is a 30watt tube amp with EL84's, could probably do what you want. Might try and play one and then see if you can get one used. I got mine new for $525 with the tone tubby speaker.

Peavey Classic 30?

Or if you want more breakup at the expense of headroom, a Fender Blues Jr. I got mine for $280, and just to scratch the surface plan on a retubing (when needed) and an Eminence Wizard. Whole bunch of mods out there and apparently they respond very well to them.

I don't know how many of you listened to the sound clip that D!ck put up a year ago but this:

...is a MAJOR problem.

The LW Metal will send my SF twin into OD....and that's 100 watts of squeaky clean!

For a 1000 bucks you can pick up a twin reissue, and with tubes that's about as clean as it gets....but it's 85 watts.

I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!

Ditch the Livewire and get something that won't put a 100w amp into overdrive.
