Sunbathing my Lester

Re: Sunbathing my Lester

Anyone who leaves the guitar out in the sun to generate a faded effect can't care less about whether or not the neck joints ****s up in the end as a result of his sagacious judgement.

Hide glue needs about 70 deg C to deglue.....and this is 70 at the glue interface mind you. Given the properties of wood, the ambient temp would need to be about 90 C in the sun for it to reach to 70 all the way through.
Titebond needs steaming or (for a fretboard) a clothes iron for a good portion of time plus a spatula to prise it open.

I know where I live we got some temps of 47-48 deg C in the last weeks heatwave, but I feel you'd need a bit more hot in temp than that to really be in danger.

I haven't noticed any adverse effects apart from the sweating I mentioned.

I wanted the top to fade but noticed that the finish became "harder" so I did both sides. I leave it out in the sun for about an hour per session, I try to do this with the morning sun which isn't as hot as the sunlight at say, mid day.

I've known people to hang them near a windows so the UV rays could bounce off indirectly but at least the guitar is still in the air conditioning.

I think you're nuts but then again I'm bats~it crazy.

Re: Sunbathing my Lester

Couldn't you just get a UV light and do it without the heat? This seems like overkill to achieve the effect you want, and can cause (I will say will cause) other things to go wrong.

Re: Sunbathing my Lester

how much heat does it take for wax potting to melt? I would bet in a place like Yuma it could melt sitting in 115 degree direct sun.

Re: Sunbathing my Lester

If you used a hack-saw to cut the neck off, you could probably fit it in the oven and get it done faster.

It certainly could. But nothing will get the wax out of the coils.......that stuff is in there for good.
