Surfing with the Alien

Re: Surfing with the Alien

I know for a fact he used a 5150 for a couple tunes ;).

In the studio, he uses everything from 5150's, XXX's, Marshalls, Classic 50's, Vox, Soldano, etc.

Surfing with the Alien Came out in 1987. I thought the 5150's came out in the early 90's?

Re: Surfing with the Alien

Yeah, no way there is a 5150 on SWTA...Marshall for sure...DS-1 in front of it, most likely....Satch was a big influence on me as a kid, but man do I hate the tone he gets on that album...Flying In A Blue Dream has a muuuuuuuuuuuuuch better sound...The Extremist is even better, guitar tone wise IMO...

Re: Surfing with the Alien

Fawk... Brain fart. I was thinking Crystal planet. Missed that by 10 years.

Re: Surfing with the Alien

and a chandler/tube works tube driver pedal...reason I bought one..

biggest POS stomp box I ever put in front of an amp...

at the time I thought that album (and his first one, cant remember the name) had such cool guitar sounds...now when I listen to it, it gives me the heebiejeebies..:laugh2: :laugh2:

"Not Of This Earth"?

I Love Satch....He's a great guy....I Met his niece here in Florida also....I've been a fan of Joe's music ever since I heard "Always With You,Always With Me" and "Satch Boogie"....Late 80s..

I also don't care for all the tones he's gotten over the years....I Loved the tones he got on "Ride" or "Big Bad Moon" off the Blue Dreams release...His newer stuff is pretty good also,as is the Live San Francisco DVD.....

Re: Surfing with the Alien

+1 on the Live in San Francisco DVD...I hadn't listened to Joe in years and this DVD made me fall in love with him all over again. Number 1 shredder in my eyes...

I Like the fact that he mixes up his styles alot more these days...He does blues, heavy shredder stuff, but then he does something really nice and pretty like "Love Thing" etc....He's also a pretty decent slide player..Seems he concentrates more on taste these days other than just ripping....Everyone knows the guy can really rip now!

Re: Surfing with the Alien

Always with you, Always with me definately sounds like an SLO to me. I can nail that tone with the SLO patch on my GT-6.

Re: Surfing with the Alien

I seem to recall reading once that it was a 50 watt Marshall Silver Jubilee, but it's been a long time ago. I do recall, that prior to using the 30th Anniversary Marshall head, he used 50 watt Marshalls (of unspecified model) and single 4x12 cabs most of the time. He once mentioned that he liked to play just loud enough to get feed back as needed.

Re: Surfing with the Alien

On a Side Note, I saw a short little video clip of Satch holding the White Kramer he used on those early albums... Surfing is said to of been recorded with a early Kramer... the ones with the almost Strat like headstock from the early 80's.... On the surfing cd it says he uses Ibanez guitars but it is said he used that Kramer for even a lot of stuff on Flying In A Blue Dream.. It's in the video/dvd called The Satch Tapes.... Joe is sitting in the studiop recording a vocal track for Flying and is holding that Kramer....

the Kramer you are talking about is an
Early (I think 83' or 84') "Beak" head Kramer Pacer.

That's why he's the number 1 shredder to me...he has tons of soul and taste and only pulls out the big guns when necessary. Even his fast stuff is so smooth and musical...I've been a sucker for his ballads since the beginning, what a great player...

Re: Surfing with the Alien

Been into Satch more lately.
He really plays with feeling, and his stuff is so "musical", rather than a flurry of 10,000 notes/measure.

He also looks like he is enjoying himself--having fun--when he plays, unlike Yngwie (who I like as well) who tends to look like he is trying to be uber-cool...or maybe just constipated.

The "fun" aspect is contagious, amking me want to pick up the guitar.

on the track "Flying..." I was using a JS1000 prototype Ibanez guitar into a Boss DS-1, into a Boogie MK2 head, into a 4x12 Boogie speaker bottom. "Crystal Planet" was a JS1000 into a Whammy pedal, a Fulltone Ultimate Octave pedal, into a Peavey 5150, into a Marshall 4x12 bottom. Both setups were using a Shure 57 mic....I hope that answers your questiion...Joe

You can find that about 3/4 of the way down in this page. http://www.satriani.com/perl/2002/ttj/main?thread=1&author_id=7467

As far as SWTA, I can recall him mentioning in a BOSS Magazine interview that he used his DS1 into a pair of Marshall tube amps (he can be seen using JMPs and dual-channel JCM800s in live concert photos of the era) and a JC120 for clean stuff. He also said he used an Eventide harmonizer for a lot of his effects, including the chorus sound on the title track.
