Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Ok - I got my hands on a Line6 Guitar port last week after hearing Nuntius's brilliant Open String Solo.

I'm learning the various solos from Sweet Child with my guitar teacher at the moment and I think I've finally got the intro down to the point that I'm not hitting the wrong strings every other time or accidently muting notes etc.

It's only a short clip - just the first few barrs, just wondered how much further you guys think I need to practise it before it's spot on.

I had to record it with a cheap mic infront of the amp so the quality's not great but you get the idea.

Be gentle with me, it's my first ever clip :)

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Jaganath - you've got no need to worry - that flat out ruled!

As with others and especially me, the recording seemed a little bit crackly (sp.) but as you said, you recorded it with a cheap mic.

Go forward now, keep working at the new stuff, thats how we improve.

Oh and btw, wouldn't you just run the Line 6 straight into the computer? Or am I talking about a different thing... I just posted a thread about modelling amps (those small things)...

Good stuff Jag!

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Thanks :) I was pretty happy with the tone I was getting.

Well, I've got the L/R channels from the Guitar Port outputting into the L/R channels on my amp so I can play through the amp - what I need is a lead that goes from L/R channels on the guitar port to the Mic input on my soundcard (as Nuntius pointed out - cheers) :) I'll get one at the weekend.

There is nothing wrong with that at all bro. Sounded just like the real thing. I have played that song live and (if I remember correctly) the intro is the hardest part of the entire song. All of the solos are very basic and pretty easy to play. You'll be shredding out the entire song in no time.

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Can't fault it. Can't play it either (not without a bit of practice). Welcome to tips and clips. When you get your recording stuff sorted you'll be a great asset to the forum.

I'm an asset to this forum and an a$$hole to the other one.

If you get the chance, maybe you could show us how to play it.

Thanks :) I'm working on the rest of the song so hopefully I'll have some more clips soon. I expect there are loads of guys who could show you how to play it better than me, 6 months down - rest of my life to go learning wise.

If you'd like the tab/powertab for it I'll send it on over.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Great execution Jaganath. And you don't suck at all. The more you'll post, the more confidence you'll gain :)

You'll certainly like this forum, seems to me it's a bit different that the other ones (of course it's different, Lee's an a$$hole in the other ones :laugh2: )

For an unknown reason, I hardly ever get an answer in the pup lounge. Go figure.

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

You come in having played for only 6 months, play what was voted in my guitar magazine the 'best riff ever' pretty much flawlessly, with a tasty tone, and ask us how bad you suck  , come on are you trying to make us feel bad?!

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Not sure if it was the recording quality or your playing, but there was one small problem. There were parts where notes bled into each other instead of sounded out clearly... other than that, you're fine.

I'm with Ocifer. It was great playing but some notes did sustain longer than they should have.

Now, I'm not sure if it was the GuitarPort, the mic, or what...but while the tone was great and very faithful to the GNR tone, it needs a little hotter gain with a more liquid feel. But seriously, that was near dead on. Sweet!

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Don't you think you're being just a little over critical? The guy's only been playing a few months. It's a fine effort and better than I could do without a load of practice.

Even on the original recording by Guns a couple of those notes run into each other. Good job.

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Lee, I didn't notice he'd only been playing a few months. I said it was quite good and it is very good for a few months, however, I'm only telling it like I hear it, and I heard notes run together.

And to Korovamilkdud, yes that's true. However they don't run together that much.

nah.. the solo is much harder than the intro. the solo took me some time to make it perfect. the intro is just repeating itself most of the time

oh andactually, if u didnt notice, in the clip, the last bar is supposed to be the same as the 2nd last bar, if you know what i mean

I had a quick go at this last night. Can I ask what fingering you use on the intro riff, please?

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Can't help you with that, but have you tried Power Tab? It's software where you download a tab file (very small) and it plays back the tune for you, and can program multiple guitars, bass, drums, etc.

Sometimes fingerings are included in performance notes within the program, but more often than not are excluded.

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Sorry you misunderstand. I'm not asking for the fingering for myself. It's just not the type of fingering I'd expect many in this forum to use. I was wondering how they approached it.

Re: Sweet Child Intro - how bad do I suck?

Nice work mate!!

You mentioned to me last week about showing you how to play it, if I recall? OK, I should be up and running to post clips this week (touch wood!), but I thought it was pretty much fine (apart from the one bum note, but show me a player that's never played a bum note and I'll show you a liar!! :laugh2:

The only suggestion I would make is that the intro has to be very precise. So at the end of the first bar, when you go from the high G (1st string) to the A (3rd string) and then the F#(1st string) to the A (3rd string), try to make those notes as disntinct as possible with practically no ringing. So don't barre or mini-barre the strings to play that (thats what it sounded like you were doing to play it). Play individual notes. Repeat that same technique in each measure throughout the intro. You're almost there and with that sliught technique change, you'll have it nailed mate!!! Don;t take this as a criticism - its good - it's just you asked me how to play it last week so I thought I'd really listen to your clip and help how I could...

Playing it at gig volume through a driven Marshall, you have to make sure each note is REALLY distinct, so it's good practice!!! :)

Nice stuff...
