synth pickups

Re: synth pickups

I am using the Roland GA20. No pots necessary. Self contained. Tracks OK and is sufficient for my needs. If you want to shred you will need one of the under saddle pups out there.

Re: synth pickups

I don't recall the maker. Its the same people who make the piezo's for electrics. As for sounds, the pickup doesn't make any sound. Those come from the synth you plug them into. Its not like how a guitar pickup influences tone.

The Roland pup was like $225? its been a while since I bought it.

Re: synth pickups

Hmmm ... lot of midi questions today. This is the 3rd thread today about midi controllers or guitar synths! Roland makes two synth pickups for guitar. The 1st thing you need to know is that a synth pup is actually SIX pickups in one; each 'micro pickup' picks up the sound of the closest string. I haven't had any problems with crosstalk yet, and I've been using one since 2000 (about 4 yrs).

The 1st pickup is external, and you mount in on the guitar just in front of the bridge. I have a stand-along GK2A on my Jem, and a slightly different version of the same pickup on my Roland Ready Strat.

The 2nd pickup is mounted internally into the the guitar. Some degree of routing is needed to make this happen.

The pickup has to be wired to a 13-pin serial cable, as well as two buttons (called S1 and S2 for editing) and blend control and a volume pot for the GK2A ...

From there, the 13 pin cable goes to my Roland GR30. This is a straight-up synthesizer, just like any other. The difference is that it's controlled by a guitar instead of a keyboard.

There are over 300 sounds, so I won't go into the list here, but suffice it to say there are guitar sounds, brass, woodwind, synth, sitar, percussion, as well as analog synth sounds in there.

As for cost, it will get expensive FAST. Expect to pay around $200 for the pup, another $600-800 for a synth, and if you want to use a midi controller, the Roland FC200 (which is what I use) expect to pay another $400 for the controller. If you get the pup professionally mounted (recommended), it will cost extra for that ...
