Talk To Me About Floyd Rose Sustain Blocks. I have Quite A Few Questions

Re: Talk To Me About Floyd Rose Sustain Blocks. I have Quite A Few Questions

Agree with all of the above; I pretty much upgrade every OFR or Ibanez Edge Block to either a F.U. Big Brass Block (never tried any other material as I love the BRASS) from ebay seller "O C Custom" or "squidmusic" or "Hoockey"...all great sellers w/fair prices, quick shipping and great customer service.
I've got one on the way from Hoockey as we speak.

Arise ye thread of old..... Live again! I always bought my blocks from hoockey on ebay. Lately, for my most played axes, I spent the extra bones and got some from KGC. I like having the spring lock down bar. Would prolly be a PITA if I was gigging.... Im a believer. I am curious about other materials tho. I recently scored a deal on a used Ti block that Ill have to try one of these days.. In my brain, I can see how bigger and heavier = more mass and thus more sustain, but the Ti one is smaller and lighter, so.... Supposedly its density too.. I wouldnt have bought I Ti one if I hadnt gotten it cheap.. I would like to try Tungsten tho.. Again, a denser, heavier metal.. Heavy Metal is good!! haha

I put a big brass block on a Gotoh Floyd Rose. The sound did not improve. It's like the sound became all midrange. It lost string to string definition. After a month I switched back to the stock block. Which so happens to be brass too. Just not as big. About two thirds smaller actually. Anyway I'm glad I did the comparison. But it was about a fifty dollar lesson. Anyhow in my opinion Leo Fender and Floyd Rose got it right with their standard size inertia block. Long story short the stock block sounds better.

I apologize for not reading the #43 posts before this, but has anyone yet preached on the amazing product that is titanium Floyd blocks? I don't mean the $1k Floyd Rose unit, I mean a normal Floyd with a ~$100 titanium block. Well worth the price if you ask me, mine has imparted a nice hifi tone to my The SLUG equipped super Strat.

Ah, the lesson learned that different does always translate to improved. One mans bright is another cut, and so on.

I try to remember what change takes place so I can apply it later. A larger block added midrange to your ears? Keep that in mind if another guitar lacks it. Try to not get caught in the trap of absolutes. Just because it did or did not have a desired effect, don’t be afraid to try it elsewhere

That reminds me of when I converted my Les Paul from a Nashville TOM to an ABR-1; the change was a huge improvement. Naturally I also tried the converter kit on my Explorer and SG, and I didn't care for it on either of them. The ABR-1 made my Explorer sound like thin, tinny crap while the SG was different but not what I'd call an improvement.

You may think this is nuts, but try changing the threaded post. Stainless is brighter than brass or zinc. I also replace the short OEM studs for longer that go deeper in the guitar. The longer studs has more effect on the thicker LPs, but worth a shot. I try to transfer as much vibration as I can thru those studs to the guitar.
