Talk to me about Graph Tech

Re: Talk to me about Graph Tech

Hmm, strange.
I've heard reports from some Graphtec users, that sustain actually increased slightly.
This may be true if your replacing a plastic nut with graphtech.
In my case I was trying to improve tuning stability and replaced a bone nut with graphtech.

Compared to bone there was a noticeable loss of top end and a noticeable drop off in sustain.

Graphtech just ain't bad to the bone !

Re: Talk to me about Graph Tech

I would fully expect the strat to be brighter and less compressed, regardless of what saddles were on either instrument.

But when you add ebony to the tonal equation plus, a 1/2 inch of maple to the top it should be brighter than the strat IMHO. I guess it is possible for my carvin to be an exception to the the rules(or tendecies of that combo of woods) but it doesn't seem likely. I think I am going to try them on my strat because i can truly guage if there is a change in the tone or not.

Hoping that's not the case...

Now I'm really curious, as the Floyd I'm installing the saddles on is actually Big-Blocked. So there will already be an appreciable increase in sustain and note projection, and while the possibility of Nigel Tufnel-esque sustain is intriguing, if the overall effect of the saddles is like throwing a blanket on it....won't be into that... :banghead:

And here I thought I was completely in

mode...:D I've thrown stainless-steel string-lock and saddle bolts on it as well...:cool2:

Graph Tech products are phenomenal. It helps create a balanced sound and it causes guitars to stay in tune better than other products out there. If you have a sharp sounding guitar, you'd be amazed how much they can help round out the sound in a very positive way.

Yes i totally agree! :approve:

Re: Talk to me about Graph Tech

I've used them on all of my Fenders for the last 10+ years. They're amazing. I don't break strings, they stay in tune, and I think they make the guitar sound better, a little woodier perhaps. They do exactly what their hype says.

Re: Talk to me about Graph Tech

Just take some graphite shavings either from a pencil or the tubes of shavings they sell for lubrication purposes at Home Depot, and sprinkle it into the string slots.
Problem solved.
When it all get's too much for me I do just that but I find graphite
shavings pencil or powder only lasts a few weeks and ends up making a mess of the fretboard and my fiingers.
It may be that I'm just not delicate enough and or not patient enough.
Thanks anyway for the tip.

(...You know they got pills for thrills and spills and even ills but I think it's just a little too late. )

Well, that makes me feel a little bit better. :) :thanks: Interestingly, another one of the claims for the saddles is increased 'bite', which you'd also think would not be the case if there was a 'dulling' effect...

Bite is bull****. Trust me, I've had the graphite saddles and nuts. Don't believe everything you hear on these. It has a "warming" effect if you will (one person's "dull" I guess is another one's warm or balanced). Steel, bone and other such materials are harder and will give off more bite, which you may or may not want given your specific guitar. With me, my philosophy has always been to try and get a guitar as balanced sounding and smooth playing as possible and rely on my amps to give me the different tones and textures I need. I get my "bite" from the amplifier, not from a guitar that has extra treble response due to a sharp saddle or nut.

Maybe it's just me, but the only time I ever noticed more sustain with the Graph Tech was when I had replaced a bone nut that wasn't fully cut right in the first place. I don't think the graphite products rob sustain (in my situations they've been the equivalent of a well cut bone or similar nut), I just don't think you're going to get more sustain out of it. YMMV.

Hi can I revive this thread.
I just bought a strat with Ebony fretboard & block bridge (non Tremolo)
Even with a Hotrail in the bridge its a bit on the bright side.
Notacible at high gain & volume

I have been thinking of changing the saddles hence there seems to be alot of high end strumming & listening to the guitar unpluged

Im really interested in the original string saver Graphtech
Has anyone else had similar experiences to the above quote ?

Re: Talk to me about Graph Tech

I've changed all the saddles on all my guitars over to String Savers. I love 'em.

IMO, the best $30 you'll spend in gear.
