Teach me about tuners

Re: Teach me about tuners

I'm sorry
I totally missed your post
Thought he was asking me

Are your tuners the same as the ones I have

I bought the set on my SG in the Trading Post back in 2012 or so; I think they're the same as yours but I'm not sure. These look like what I have.

I had to install them with 10mm conversion bushings because Gibson evidently uses at least two types of 'Gibson Deluxe' tuners. The stock ones on the SG were poorly made junk; they sort of look like Klusons but have larger posts with screw-in bushings. I'm not sure if the gear ratios are low or if the general quality is bad, and the posts wiggle slightly which leads to horrible tuning stability.

The stock tuners on my 335 couldn't be more different. Kluson-sized hole with push-in bushings; rock solid posts and tuning. I've heard that Gibson's higher-end 'Deluxe' tuners are made by Gotoh and the quality is similar, though the plastic buttons feel different and are a different color.

Re: Teach me about tuners

Personally I think it's more down to the way you string your guitar and whether your bridge/trem (if applicable) is messed up. All of my guitars hold tune pretty well and they have a range of tuners from no-name (my Seagull) to Klusons on my SG, and the Fender Vintage style.

Don't forget a properly cut nut. The stock plastic nut on my Guild DV-6 used to 'ping' all of the time when tuning the G and B strings, and the tuning stability sucked with Grover Rotomatics. I recently had the nut replaced and my tuning problems are gone.

Generally speaking, I agree. A tuner swap probably isn't worth it unless all of the other potential problems have been addressed. The biggest issue on my SG was tuner post wobble, though there was a lot of slop with the stock tuners and the nut wasn't great either. longcat and I swapped our basses to Gotoh GB7 keys because the stock tuners' gear ratio was too low which caused a bit of slop.

Re: Teach me about tuners

Great tips on nut and bridge setup as well.

Part of my intention (that I never articulated) is also to compare tuners for a new build, and how to select them for the application. :)

Teach me about tuners

Every tech I've talked to immediately attributes tuning stability problems to the nut, not the tuning heads. I had issues with my (surprise) Gibson LP Jr and sure enough It turned out to be the nut.

I mainly put locking tuners on for easy string changes.
