Tech screws up nut Pt.2

Just got my les Paul back from the shop.

The d string slot was refilled and it seems like the other slots were "worked" to get to the right height.

I don't believe these strings heights are right though and I am particularly upset about the high e slot.

Options at this time are to go tomorrow and ask for the owner of the store to give his two cents on the quality of this work

Or take to different tech.

Personally i fee like they should bite the bullet and install a new nut altogether since they've made the graph tech I bought look like a piece of crap.

The "worked" areas don't even line up with the slots graph tech had!

These were not the issue! The only problem was that the d string was too low and now they have worn down so much of the original slots...

Low e nut action is too low

Looks like it was the string they least knew how to handle...

I mean I'm supposed to stand for this crap?

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

I'm sorry to say that's appalling work.

That simply can not be the work of a professional. No way!

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

Wow. Looks like something a 12 year old would do to "fix" the nut of his Schecter guitar bundle guitar ... with a hacksaw.

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

My advice would be to do it yourself. You have a guitar where there's no wood on one side of the nut so you can knock it out easily. Also the graph tech nuts seem to be shaped correctly for Gibson, 1 3/4" wide with 1 7/16" E to e. It should be as simple as knocking the old nut out, gluing the new one in, then filing the nut slots. If you have the money, get the quality files and feeler gauges. 1st practice on your existing nut by taping off the slots and filling them with super glue. Let the super glue dry over night. File away a little at a time and check by putting the string back in the slot and tuning up to pitch. Stagger the heights .020" at the low E and .016" at the high e. This will be low enough to play in tune and be easy to play but high enough to have a little to dig in to and have no buzz.15239.jpg

What the heck was the guy using, a butter knife?

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

I wouldn't even try to get anything better from them. That piece of work looks mediocre.

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

That is terrible work...I would show it to the owner but I wouldn't allow that tech to touch your guitar again.

That's nuts. Afterwards he enjoyed the insane setting on a line 6.

What's wrong with the Insane setting on a Line 6? :22:

You do NOT knock the nut out from the side. You lift it out with nippers. Gently rock it, while pulling straight up. Those who knock nuts, should have their personal nuts knocked.

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

Last time i installed a tusq on a gibson, all i had to do was sand down the bottom of the nut until it was the right height.
Buy another one online and do it yourself.
While you are waiting for delivery, take your axe to the tech and give him a serve of "wtf were you thinking?".

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

About 15 years ago, I made a nut for my acoustic guitar using a bone blank, and files I made by gluing lengths of wound guitar string to thin dowel rods. Other tools included my original Leatherman PST, a razor blade, and one grit of sandpaper. It came out miles better than what they did to your LP.

Go get your money back.

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

I would talk to the manager
I wouldn't let THAT tech touch it
Even if they give you a refund, bad mouth them everywhere

He should be appalled
He should ask for another chance
He should make it right with another nut

He shouldn't berate his employees in front of you

Its up to you

I took my truck in for service
It came back with all kinds of stuff newly broken
I threw a WTF fit in the service office
The next morning I called the service manager
My outburst had already made it back to him
He made no excuses for his employees, simply asked for another chance
When it came back it was right

Unhappy customers wreak businesses
He knows this

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

Bring it back. That's horrible and the owner needs to know that one of his techs did that so it doesn't happen to someone else.

Re: Tech screws up nut Pt.2

I think I'm going to try to get one of the graph tech nuts and sand it myself for a perfect fit.

Can't be worse than this!!!!

That's exactly what I would do man. More people should just take matters into their own hands because the outcome will be more gratifying.
