I'm working with an alder body/maple neck tele with ashtray/3 barrel bridge. It has a 5/2 in the neck and Alnico Pro II in the bridge.
The 5/2 neck sounds great with a little extra treble, kind of muscular tele/strat. When going to the bridge APII the lower strings are snappy and full but the high strings are ice picky, even with tone control backed off about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way. If the tone control is backed off any more, the high strings lose the ice pick but the low strings lose their snap.
I've spent a few hours working with pickup height and have yet to find a good compromise.
Btw, I did try the 5/2 bridge in this guitar but didn't find it to be the right match for this guitar - treble stings still too bright.
So, any ideas on which bridge pickup could keep the goodness of the APII low strings but slightly darker on the high strings? The JD will not work as the staggered poles make the G string too loud.
