Tele Pickups for Tom Quayle sound

Hi guys,

I am thinking about getting a Telecaster and I need some pickup advice.
I would like to get a Tom Quayle like sound.
Ok, I know I'll have to expend thousands of years to develop such technique :-)
But anyway, which pickup set would you guys advice?

Here is a sample of the sound I am looking for.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Ivo

ivovasconchelos,
I don't know enough to offer a suggestion, but just wanted to say how killer that sound is, and that he is a killer player, the only thing I would like to know (for now) is whether the Tele "cup shape" metal holder is needed to get that sound that all the great Tele players get.

Well, in that video he is using the Wampler pedal, which will affect the sound you hear. In doing some research I could only find that he uses the hand-wound proprietary pickups from that guitar manufacturer. Need to get more information on those pickup specs to offer a recommendation.

Hi buff, indeed Tom Quayle has an outstanding sound and technique.
About the Telecaster players, indeed, something special should happen.
There are so many Tele players with special sounds.

Another player that I do like and have a special Tele sound is Tim Lerch.
Here is a sample in case you don't know him.

Hi The Dali,

Indeed he is using a Wampler pedal.
But the initial playing is just the clean sound before turning the pedal on.

I did check the website of this guitar brand (http://fibenare-guitars.com/) and I also notice that it is a custom pickup but they don't have any information about the characteristics of the pickup.

I was thinking about getting the Vintage Stack Tele set.

What do you think about it?

Re: Tele Pickups for Tom Quayle sound

I don't have any experience with the stacked set. I'm looking at Tele options myself... Not sure what to look at just yet... so far I've been thinking about:

Fender Blackguard Custom Shop
Duncan Donahue Bridge pickup

Hi The Dali,

I did check them and they did sound quite good.
I personally like the Fender Blackguard Custom shop.

The only problem for me, and it is something personal, is that they are true single coils.
I like the noiseless feature in my pickups.

Cheers,
Ivo

Re: Tele Pickups for Tom Quayle sound

Although not specifically what Tom uses, a lot of fusion players (e.g. Jack Thammarat) seem to be using Mama pickups (hand made in Italy). The owner Claudio seems extremely knowledgeable. If you tell him what you're after I'm sure he'll be able to help. I'm going to place an order for a full set, pots and wiring shortly. They seem incredibly versatile, transparent and musical from all the clips on YouTube though. Might be worth checking out!
