Hi all, looking for my possible next purchase, swamp ash body (tele type) with a little 59 in the bridge, wondering what would be recommended for the neck (humbucker that may also split)..

Nice cleans through to bluesy type tones?

I would go for a P90 style pup, or an actual P90. What are your routing options for the neck?

At the moment the guitar I am considering has a standard sized humbucker in the neck, not sure if this can be modified, without taking the guard off to see what's beneath, I am drawn to that style of tele with a humbucker neck though

Sorry, I misread your question, I was thinking along the lines of any bucker sized pup. My favorite SD neck model would be a 59/Jazz hybrid, which you'd have to put together yourself (think only the 59/C5 bridge is offered by SD). With a 3 way switch for series/parallel/split, you can find a lot of cool tones. Otherwise I'd say a Jazz or 59 in the neck. I lean toward the Jazz, as I find it to be a it more clear sounding.

Maybe a p-rails setup in the neck with a triple shot to open up lots of tonal possibilities

I've got a 59 in the neck of a Tele with the Little 59 in the bridge and the two go perfectly together. I was surprised how bright and articulate the 59 neck was, it's lovely. I think a Jazz would be taking it a bit too far for me. You could also consider an Alnico II Pro for a little more smoothness, or a Pearly Gates for a bit more attitude. I'm considering a PG myself.

I agree with Laughing Kookaburra. I love the way P90´s sound in the neck. Most Teles have a large enough hole below the pickguard to accept a P90, even if doesn´t (and just has the size of a humbucker) it would be very little routing or chiseling needed. The P90 is just a tad longer than a bucker, and thinner too. I would bet that the P90 fits if you just change the pickguard.

Finding a P90 sized pickguard won´t be so easy, but the tone of the P90 is worth it. I suggest navigate on eBay, or better yet make the pickguard yourself or have it made by a local guitar tech.

Thanks for all the help,

Having heard more of the samples on the website (and YouTube demo’s) think it’s in this order:

1. 59
2. Seth
3. PG

I have APH-1’s as a set in my other guitar, (which I love) hard to get away from but it would be nice to have a ‘slightly different’ sound..

Re: Tele with a little 59 bridge, which bucker for the neck?

Of those 3 my favorite is the Seth. But I have only installed one set of PGs, which lacked clarity in that Gibson LP, yet everyone in this forum says theyre nice and bright. Maybe I just had bad luck on that ax, I would have to install more PGs before I have my say. Teles are certainly different.

The new rave around here is a 59/Jazz hybrid, I havent tried it. It would be more expensive since you would have to buy both pups.

I have installed plenty of 59s & Seths and I certainly prefer the Seth. On bridge it might be too bright for a Tele, but on neck i think its fine.

Does the Seth Lover only come with the nickel cover? If so, it might be worth taking the aesthetics of the Tele into consideration.

IMO, warm pickups sound extra warm in a Tele neck, so I'd get something with more highs like the Jazz, 59/Jazz or the Pearly Gates, which are great for blues tones, or install a split or parallel push-pull pit for the neck pickup if you go with something warmer like a '59, so that you can get some bite back if the situation calls for it.

Re: Tele with a little 59 bridge, which bucker for the neck?

Of the three you named, my favorite is the 59. It's a really warm sounding pup and is ooey gooey for clean tones. I haven't tried it split, so I couldn't tell you what it's like.

Also, I'm not sure that you will like the Lil 59 bridge. I've heard it can sound pretty dead.

It's definitely not great. My brother put one in his Tele I think hoping it would turn into a Les Paul, and it's pretty far from, but it fattened it up so he was happy. It's not my guitar, so I can't swap it out. I doubt any mini humbucker will come to life in that position, but I'd go for something hotter and hope for the best. I'd also put a push pull to split the bridge humbucker, Teles were designed with single coils in mind so it's just an all around good idea to have an escape switch that can get you back to safety if the guitar is putting out unflattering tones for a particular song you're trying to perform.

Honestly I think the Quarter Pound is the correct solution for getting a "fat" Tele bridge, you get those single coils highs, though much of it is still attenuated by the hot wind, and you can get a tapped version to take it down to stock territory. And it looks good there.

They need to do a Screamin Demon for Tele.

If you wanted to get a custom made pickup, you could get a nice sounding tele sized humbucker, I don't know what you'll find that's similar to a 59 in that style. A hot lead stack might be a good option.

I had an old Jazz in the neck of my one tele and it paired well with a lil 59. If you wanted something big in the bridge, the BG 1400 might be worth checking out.

59n if you like alnico 5 tones or PGn if you like alnico 2 tones.

Not a fan of the Jazz.

I do like the AII Pro but like the PG more.

A friend of mine put a Stag Mag in the neck of a Tele ... it sounded awesome. Plus you can switch it for a true single-coil sound, too. I seem to remember that guitar already had a double-coil bridge pickup along the lines of the Lil 59.

I do prefer alnico 2 warmth, love my A2pro's, just be nice to have similar tone but with it's own identity

Re: Tele with a little 59 bridge, which bucker for the neck?

Hey guys, sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I finally purchased the tele (alder body and rosewood board) and decided on the pups after hearing lots of samples.

In the end the Lil 59 didn’t do it for it me all, too dark sounding and really wanted a ‘clearer’ bridge so I went for the Vintage Stack.

It was between the Pearly Gates and the Seth Lover for the neck and I seemed to be drawn to the Seth magically and purchased the 4 Conductor version (not for purists I know).

I intend to wire both pups to split via push pull 500k Audio taper pots, I have .022, .033 & .047 caps at the ready, have drawn up my wiring scheme but wanted to canvas
opinion or thoughts (experience of either pup) before I starts the melting process (as I attempt to curb my addiction to modding, unrealistic I know).

Any takers or has this attempt been exhausted before my time (I have searched high and low prior to posting but haven’t found this combination).

Any advice greatly appreciated..
