Hi,
I am seeking info and perhaps a general consenus on best pickups to suit slide style playing for a Telecaster. regards. Irish

Re: Telecaster pickups.

I think a bright set of alnico 5 pickups might be to bright for slide on a Tele. I'd want a set with nice thick mids and smooth not-to-glassy highs. Alnico II.

I think that set would be the APII neck and Jerry Donahue bridge if you want something slightly stronger than most vintage pickups or the Antiquity I's if you want vintage output.

If you want mini-humbuckers I'm not the right guy to give info...I like single coils.

On second thought, Lowell George sounded pretty good with his a5 Strat pickups, as does Bonnie Raitt and Ry Cooder...so who knows? Probably depends alot on what YOU like.

Re: Telecaster pickups.

Trying to think of Tele slide players and the only one who comes to mind (aside from Danny Gatton playing slide with a beer bottle!) is Muddy Waters. If you liked Muddy's tone, then a set of alnico 5 Duncan Broadcasters would do that tone. Lew

Re: Telecaster pickups.

I think for slide A P90 style PUPS would be great. I don't know if there would be an altering to the PUP cavity or not, but I have a buddy of mine that has an all Mahogony body guitar, and it has Antiquity P90's in it...... It is a sick slide guitar.....

Re: Telecaster pickups.

I have a tele set up for slide with a Hot neck/ JD bridge here:
tele slide clips

I think they sound fine, but I use some overdrive for a little beef

I think Lew probably knows that Lowell George may have used a tele bridge pickup in his strat, BTW :)

I also agree with Bludave - P90's sound great for slide!

Re: Telecaster pickups.

Quarter Pound Teles will get you just about everything you want in a Tele tone.

Re: Telecaster pickups.

I too like the JD at the bridge, but I'm partial to mini humbuckers at the neck. I like the SM-1 in that spot.

Re: Telecaster pickups.

I've always fancied a Tele with a Jerry Donahue bridge and a Phat Cat neck, with medium action, and 11's for slide. I used to play a lot more slide than I have recently, and usually use my Dobro or lapsteel, but an alder tele with that setup would be my first choice.

Re: Telecaster pickups.

i think an A5 duncan broadcaster would be a killer bridge pickup for slide or if you wanted more of a vintage tone maybe the antiquity II set. A p90 would be really cool to have in there too.

Love the bridge/slide clip-it's gritty and snarly. What you'd expect from a tele slide.

Re: Telecaster pickups.

thanks, Dave

I like the tone of the individual pickups, however, I'm not sure they're the best match together .. it seems like the Broadcaster might be a better match for the Hot neck, and a APII tele neck might match the JD better

actually, playing slide on a tele makes sense to me, since they stay in tune well and sustain well.
