The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

I'm sure mosty of you on the forum will rejoice now that I won't need to be putting up 50 posts of amp questions :D

I shot up to Guitar Center today with my Jackson to check out the Behringer V-tone modelers. Indeed the 2x12 model sounded very, very good..for the price it's just insanely good. The Fender/Boogie/Marshall sounds were very convincing. The effect were good. Didn't do as well w/ mid level gain settings, but still sounded a $hitpile better than the Marshall MG's and AVT's, to my ears.

As I walked over to the Behringer section though, I noticed a Vox Valvetronix 50 watter that was not there last week. So after playing through the V-tone, off I went to the Vox, then my plan was to try the Line 6 Spider II just to make sure my initial impressions from a couple of weeks ago were still valid.

Never made it to the Spider. I just couldn't stop playing the Vox. That little 12ax7 makes a diff. No it's still not like owning a Boogie, or 59 Bassman, or JCM800, but it's pretty darn good..very "tubey". All the models sound nice to me, though not all are to my personal tastes. The Botique models (Dumble) are excellent, especially the clean version...really sweet. I didn't think I'd like the "NuMetal" model at all, but I actually like it alot: it's very good for John Sykes w/ Whitesnake or Blue Murder type high gain sounds. I believe it's based on a Boogie rectifier series (?). The 80's Marshall is good, but sounds like they modeled a 6550 tube powered model instead of an EL34 version..at least to my ears.

My only nitpicks are lack of a presence control, and the 70's Marshall really doesn't have much gain. My 1987 has tons more gain, as do the other original 70's 100 and 50 watts I've played (no mods). I'd say it's more like a JTM45 gain-wise. I'm gonna try goosing it with my Super OD or a TS, and see what happens as that is my fave tone Marshall-wise.

The variable wattage thing is way cool, I can get the amp to a whisper and it still sounds REALLY good. No it's not a 5150 ,TSL, VHT, or other high end tube amp I really wanted, but much more practical for my useage and my bank account :D I'll grab an EQ pedal for the presence issue.

Great amp for the budget minded who want some nice sounds (as is the Behringer V-tone).

Now just gotta grab a new SD pickup or two and I'll be set :D Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

Re: The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

I'm tellin you guys, get a Valvetronix head, and put it on a high quality speaker cabinet. I'm a tube freak, and I still spend more time practicing on a Vox AD60 on top of a Marshall 4-12 w/Vintage 30's. My favorites are the Rectifier, Bassman, Blackface, and Vox AC-15 & AC-30TB models. The layout is easy to navigate, since all the FX are laid out like stompboxes, not parameters you have to scroll through.
I even put a higher quality 12AX7 in mine, since it's a mini power amp that feeds a big solid state power section, then to speakers. It means the tube feel is under your fingers.

Re: The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

heh..I'm never happy ;) :D

I played for a few more hours last night, and I'm starting to get miffed about the lack of presence control. It really needs it. The amp sounds alot "darker" or "distant" at home vs. in the store (don't they always sound diff at home? :D).

I'm gonna give it alot of hours in the next few days and see if the speaker breaks in a bit... otherwise It might be going back (good thing for the 30 day return policy) I just hate the having to buy something else (in this case an equalizer) to "fix" a prob with something brand new :yell: The money is not the issue..it's the principle.

anyone else having/had this issue with the Vox valvetronix 15/30/50?

Re: The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

I had the same type of issues with the PODxt Pro I used in my rack setup. Everything just seemed to need a lot of treble or presence to make it sound right. It finally sounded really pleasing to my ears when I added a 31-band EQ and BBE Sonic Maximizer, but then the rack became too big of a burden for my needs. So, I sold it all off and found a great deal on a Mesa Rectoverb head, and so far so good :).

LOL...not what I wanted to hear, but thanx for the comments...seems I'm not alone at least :D

The search is never over! I don't how many times I've thought "finally..." :laugh2:

Re: The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

At least I was talking about the POD, and not the Vox unit ;). I have become a tube lover in the short time I've had the Mesa though, there's a definite mojo that the Line 6 stuff didn't get across. Much more feel, punch, and dynamic control.

I've been a tube guy for nearly all my life...and have had only 3, maybe 4 solid state amps..so I'm kind of regressing I guess...No doubt that there is some "magic" in tubes. If I could just get my stinkin' 1987 reissue to sound decent at low volumes w/ the power brake, I wouldn't even be looking for something else..that amp just sings...

Re: The Amp search is OVA! ...finally

I like using a BBE Sonic Maximizer with my modeling rig. It really punches up the sound.

Yeah, the BBE sounded great with the POD, but I didn't like the fact that I wasn't satisfied with the tone unless I had the BBE there. PODs are great for recording, but for live playing there are better options in my experience. I used either a POD 2.0 or PODxt for about 4 years as a preamp for my rig.

Yes this is the feeling I'm starting to get..the vox would sound much better for recording than live...

I use mine between my Boss GT-6 preamp and my Peavey Classic 60/60 tube power section, so I guess it would go best in the loop.
