I'm sure mosty of you on the forum will rejoice now that I won't need to be putting up 50 posts of amp questions
I shot up to Guitar Center today with my Jackson to check out the Behringer V-tone modelers. Indeed the 2x12 model sounded very, very good..for the price it's just insanely good. The Fender/Boogie/Marshall sounds were very convincing. The effect were good. Didn't do as well w/ mid level gain settings, but still sounded a $hitpile better than the Marshall MG's and AVT's, to my ears.
As I walked over to the Behringer section though, I noticed a Vox Valvetronix 50 watter that was not there last week. So after playing through the V-tone, off I went to the Vox, then my plan was to try the Line 6 Spider II just to make sure my initial impressions from a couple of weeks ago were still valid.
Never made it to the Spider. I just couldn't stop playing the Vox. That little 12ax7 makes a diff. No it's still not like owning a Boogie, or 59 Bassman, or JCM800, but it's pretty darn good..very "tubey". All the models sound nice to me, though not all are to my personal tastes. The Botique models (Dumble) are excellent, especially the clean version...really sweet. I didn't think I'd like the "NuMetal" model at all, but I actually like it alot: it's very good for John Sykes w/ Whitesnake or Blue Murder type high gain sounds. I believe it's based on a Boogie rectifier series (?). The 80's Marshall is good, but sounds like they modeled a 6550 tube powered model instead of an EL34 version..at least to my ears.
My only nitpicks are lack of a presence control, and the 70's Marshall really doesn't have much gain. My 1987 has tons more gain, as do the other original 70's 100 and 50 watts I've played (no mods). I'd say it's more like a JTM45 gain-wise. I'm gonna try goosing it with my Super OD or a TS, and see what happens as that is my fave tone Marshall-wise.
The variable wattage thing is way cool, I can get the amp to a whisper and it still sounds REALLY good. No it's not a 5150 ,TSL, VHT, or other high end tube amp I really wanted, but much more practical for my useage and my bank account
I'll grab an EQ pedal for the presence issue.
Great amp for the budget minded who want some nice sounds (as is the Behringer V-tone).
Now just gotta grab a new SD pickup or two and I'll be set
Thanks everyone for the help and advice.
