Fake:

That fake looks pretty good until you look at the string spacing. Unless my eyes are really messed up, it looks like the strings are way off of the poles. Looks like the strings line up between the poles, instead of going over them.

Also, if you look really close, you can see the studs on the TOM bridge are large studs, not the small studs that you'd see on a real Gibson.

WOW!! You guys are good. I don't pay attention to Gibbys so i wouldn't have really seen these. If it was a Fender I'd probably be able to spot a fake and would be all over the forum asking an e-bay member to report it. Good job guys

I read an article quite a while back on the fakes industry. They made the point that the really good fakes are the ones (of course) we don't see.

The author claimed to have been inside a 'fakes workshop' in China or somewhere, seeing guys doing brilliant copies of a real vintage Les Paul, even doing the aging so these fake vintage guitars could be sold to collectors who don't know better.

The serial number and the truss rod cover were two give aways for me. Through further inspection, the headstock "inlays" look off to me.

The scary thing is that they've gotten the headstock shape down, that was always the dead giveaway in the past.

Serial number is wrong, that's be a 96 and he says it's a 92.

False, the S/N clearly states "Built on the 206th day of 1992, Instrument 92 on that day from the Nashville plant". 9xxx2xxx = Year, x206xxxx = Day, xxxxx5xx = Nashville Plant, xxxxxx92 = Running number of the instrument. Current Gibson S/Ns are identical except that another digit has been added to the end to accomodate higher production volumes.

But the guitar is still quite certainly a forgery, though this is one of those instruments where I´d rather see it first hand before making a decision....

i thought the sn goes the 1st # and the 5th # = year. if thats the case 92 should be accurate, if not my sg is 5yrs older than i thought it was

Hey guys...

I will be honest. My uncle gave me a Gibson SG with a crazy and wild custom paint job. It covers every inch of the guitar. The bridge is an ABR aftermarket bridge, I was not given the original one when he gave it to me. About a month after he gave it to me, he told me he got it from a friend who owed him money and actually stole this guitar from someone a very, very long time ago. I brought the guitar over to Mark at www.marksguitarloft.com . He told me it was an early 70s Gibson SG Standard. The serial number on the headstock was painted over and I have no other idea on how to identify the guitar. Where else should there be a serial number for me to find on the guitar to identify the year of this SG? I also want to sell this guitar because it does not fit my style and I feel that selling it to someone far away from here would find it a safer home. I don't even feel comfortable bringing this out to a gig in the New England area, it is a one of a kind paint job.

Info, advise?

Current Gibson S/Ns are identical except that another digit has been added to the end to accomodate higher production volumes.

Started in '05... the new digit is the 6th digit, which indicates a batch number. The last three numbers still indicate location and running number.

Still the toughest part about picking these out is the poor quality of the images. I don't have the sharpest eyes on the block, but I have a tough time picking up on the post size because of the pixelation and reflection off the chrome.

So this guy says it started its life as an Epiphone... unless the headstock shape on Epis recently match the Gibson headstock, there's a lot of work involved in getting that headstock shape on an Epiphone... it'd just about require a new neck.

You can definitely tell it's an Epiphone. The neck meets the body in the same place, the headstock inlay is the same, they just modified the shape, and had Gibson put on it, and changed the pickguard. Quite clever.

The seller states in an email that it is really an Epi? As in he knows he's scamming? He should be tossed from ebay. I guess I have been very lucky as every guitar I have bought off ebay has been what the seller stated.

Well without reading the whole thread, my first thoughts are serial number, Jack placement, inlays. Some poor bugger's gonna buy this if someone doesn't do the honourable thing!

I've mailed sellers before and told them what's wrong with the description. The last time was over a cheap 'Brian May' Burns style guitar. It barely fit the Burns description, not having Burns Pu's!
