The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

and it's all in this tiny package no bigger than a standard MXR pedal.

I've been waiting for this pedal for months, and American distributors finally got it in early this week. Mine arrived about an hour after I left for school, which sucks because I could have totally used it for my gig last night.

Full disclosure - I generally keep my gear at my band space, but I brought home my board and guitar just so I could get the pedal up and working and give it a test run. As such, I'm currently running it into a Fender Frontman 15G.

That said - this may be my ultimate Marshall in a box pedal. From the moment I turned it on, it rocked hard. The Menatone I had up until a few months ago, while amazing, can't even hold a candle to this thing. Plenty of gain, the tonestack is EXTREMELY versatile, and it's voiced OH SO GOOD.

Bonus - it's so tiny!

I realize that the relicing job will not be to most people's taste (neither will the $240 price tag) but the tone is there in spades. I'm practically cumming my pants to try this thing out through my Bassman at practice tomorrow.

And here's a shot of my pedalboard as it appears now. All I need is a Tonebender and the board will finally be full! (Of course, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop buying pedals. I still need a wah and about five more fuzzes haha)

Sounds really good.

That's the coolest Yamaha guitar I've ever seen. I've never seen a finish that fits a tortoise guard better than that, and I like the pickup layout.

Re: The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

I may think about one of these, because I was getting close to pulling the trigger on the Cmatmods Brownie. I've played that one and like it. I wish I could try the JMP and Brownie side by side, but of course it's hard (impossible) to find any store that has both.

The Weehbo JMP's control over the mids is a big selling point.

And even only having played with it for about an hour through a ****ty amp, I can tell you that it's a wonderful feature to have. It lets me get so many different tones it's mind bottling.

Ok, so I put this this thing through its paces at band practice today. We weren't doing any originals, which had me a bit down as I really wanted to see how it would fare for the music I've written on other pedals. However, we did play "Man in the Box" and "Bombtrack."

I'm in love. It's the best distortion I've ever played. So incredibly amp-like. The most full low end without ever mushing out. It has the magic pixie dust that only the upper echelon of pedals have. I played it mostly at high gain settings, but I messed around with lower gain settings for a bit and I was equally impressed. This pedal may have just killed my amp GAS, because it's exactly the distorted tone my fuzz only board was missing.

Man, I love getting a pedal that just inspires me to play.

Re: The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

Also, I wanted to comment on the brilliant mids switch. Basically, it lets you select the range of the mids knob. Center position is regular mids, left is low mids, and right is high mids. This switch allows for far more tonal versatility than you may expect. I love the tone I got with the switch in the center and the mids boosted a few db, but perhaps my favorite tone was with the switch to the left (low mids) and the mids cut by just a few db. It was so crunchy but not lacking mids at all. Just beautiful.

With this pedal, I can get my grunge/hard rock on with complete ease. I can also get some great 80's/90's metal tones - I was jamming on Seek and Destroy with my drummer today and it sounded great. I have a feeling that our cover of Pantera's Mouth for War will also sound excellent with this box. It also sounds really good for lower gain stuff. It's not voiced like a plexi, and it doesn't sound like one. It sounds like a lean and mean 70's Marshall tone. I was rocking some Zep riffs and it sounded just fantastic.

I don't think I've ever been so impressed by a distortion box.

Rich - You're kidding right....sounds like a modded plexi. As he turned the gain up right from the start I was hearing EVH

Re: The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

By the way, one reason the clip sounds as good as it does is because the Yamaha Pacifica 611 comes stock with a Duncan Custom 5 and SP90-1 neck.

That guitar intrigued me, and I found out it's not exported to the US. You'd have to order one from a European dealer for around $750.

Uh... where in the world did you get that? I just got mine from PrymaxeVintage for about $215 after their coupon.

For what it's worth, it sounds DAMN CLOSE to the youtube video through my rig (accounting for differences like amps and guitars).

Re: The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

Even though I already own this pedal, I keep watching the video because I can't play it unless it's band practice time :(

I was extremely impressed at how quiet this pedal is. I had it set LOUD and with the gain around 3:30, and it was nearly dead quiet. Impressive considering I had more than enough gain for the Alice in Chains tune we were working on.

I love how full it is. It has only a little less low end than my big muff. That's incredible - very few pedals that I've played have that much low end.

Pinch harmonics are almost effortless.

I'm rambling, but it's been about four months since I've had a bona fide distortion pedal (just fuzz for a long time) and I forgot how much fun a good one is.

Damn I want to go play this pedal so badly.

Re: The best Marshall I've ever played (and more...)

I wonder how it would compare with the legendary Marshall Guv'nor mk1.

Yours is pretty cool. It has apparently more control over mids.
