The ignorance of some people

My father in law has a 1940 martin D-28 [ I think that is the model, right year though] that I took to get an estimate on doing some repairs on it for his birthday about 8 years ago. The guitar turns out to be worth around $7000 and that was then, well the neck had gotten so bowed from mistreatment and you couldn't evan play it. I ended up breaking up with their daughter at that time and we got back together about 5 years ago now we are married so I thought hey maybe they will let me fix the guitar now. I didn't want the guitar for my self and I told them that but my the MOM flpped out and told that the guitar was in the family as a heirloom and it would go to a Franklin not a Waddington. I told her I did not want the guitar I just wanted to fix it get a solid case and just take care of it because it was being destroyed.. Well Dave stutered around and sayd to get it fixed, but I told him I didn't want anything to do with it.

I was overthere last night and went out into their garrage and there it was sitting on top of their upright freezer in the freezing weather. I asked Dave if that was the Martin and he got aa funny look on his face and said yes. I just changed the subject. They made such a big deal about this family guitar that came from his Grandfather and they leave it the open air to freeze and warm up, if that was my Grandfathers guitar it would not be treated that way.

I dont know, thats the way it goes though. The tone on that guitar is so rich and full, it's just sad. I stood there and thought " someone could just walk rihgt in here and steal this ". I just pissed off so I thought I would tell you guys. The way theit treating that guitar would be like someone putting a Rembrant in their mildew infested basement after some one told them the value.

You guys take care.

When the Carter family was still touring with Mother Maybelle she didn't even keep her Gibson Lloyd Loar L-5 in a case! They just left it in on that shelf behind the back set by the back window of whatever car they were driving around in. :laugh2: That guitar should've been protected as a National Treasure...these days, it is. :)

that seems to be a magical guitar.......DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Re: The ignorance of some people

The last time i took out the guitar to look at it was about 1 1/2 years ago and the neck is so warped now you cant play it. Their boys were playing with it and decided to see how tight they could get the strings. I don't know how long it sat like that before I opened it up but i know it was for a year or more. Man those srings were so tight I cant see how they didn't snap with the changes in the weather out there.

They wont let me do anything that is what is so frustrating about the hole thing.

I think you should initiate divine intervention and see to it that guitar gets "stolen" if you know what I mean.

yeah sure it's wrong and all, but I feel if someone doesn't appreciate something then they dont' deserve to have it in the first place. Chances are they probably wouldn't even notice it missing for a while.

Re: The ignorance of some people

pre-war martin in a garage? :smack: that thing should be restored. convince them to sell it to you before they sell it to someone else if they have a garage sale.

Re: The ignorance of some people

Try this.. Get someone you know but they don't to the house.. make sure he sees the guitar and goes all.. "Wow, that's a rarity, but it's all messed up!" You really should have it fixed..

Or something.. just an idea.

Re: The ignorance of some people

that is a shame, something like that should be treasured not left to rot away in the weather or be distroyed by kids

I hope that's not serious, but if it is that's the worse advice I've ever seen given on this forum.

Re: The ignorance of some people

I have tried to buy it, get it for a wedding pressent, help them fix it, and pay to restore it myself. I have done every thing I know how to try to at least see that this guitar is not destroyed to the point it can not be salvaged, BUT no dice. All I can say is they must not like me and put on a good a good front, or they are just flat dumb asses on this matter.

Don't think it man, do it...... :saeek:

Re: The ignorance of some people

No matter how bad I would like to have that guitar and restrore it, I could never bring myself to do it and just take it. To entertain the thought and joke about it is one thing. I guess I'll just have to watch it rot, or pay someone else to do it LOL!!

I like to think that I'm an honest and straight up kinda guy . . . but in this case, I'd get a Sears Silvertone from a garage sale, paint "Martin" on the headstock, and "swap" it when no one was looking. They'ld obviously, never know the difference.

And you wouldn't be stealing it, you'ld be preserving for some future generation of that family who would appreciate it, and to whom you'ld return it some day.

(I can rationalize with the best of 'em.) :laugh2:

Re: The ignorance of some people

how about take it, love it and repair it, then take it back inside a really protective case, and place it exactly where you found it.

I dont mean to tempt you with all these evil thoughts man, but that is a dream guitar and its being killed!

This guys got it sorted.

Re: The ignorance of some people

If they treat it like that, they probably wouldn't even notice it gone for a few days. Take it to a tech, and buy a case for it. Then take it back in the case.

I seriously doubt they would make you take it out of the case, so it'd be at least safe in there

Re: The ignorance of some people

Or here is a twist to go along with some of the current themes......

Get a pawnshop model to place in the case. Then get the Martin restored to its Justice. On a significant day, birthday, maybe even the death of the given grandfather, replace the "pawnie" with the Martin and present it as restored and provide some literature on the care of these finecrafted instruments(especially about weather and tight strings). Also reinforce that it needs to be stored inside, at least in an indoor closet. Maybe you could even get a nice stand and have it displayed in a corner of the living room as kind of a shrine. Oh yeah, Make sure the literature doesnt say anything about the value, because that may cause some underlying motives to rise up. I would hate for the guitar to disappear after all those efforts!

Just another bit of advice. My point is that I would hate for you to give up. This guitar NEEDS some TLC, and I think you have the heart to care for it!

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Not that you would need either in this case!!

Good Luck, and keep us posted!
