Re: The ignorance of some people

I like the idea of replacing it with a cheapie, but (as rotten as this sounds) why exactly would you put the Martin back into these hell-ish conditions? That would be like taking a kid from a sh*tty home, giving him a meal, a bath and a change of clothes, then sending him right back.

Get a cheapie lookalike, "Martinize" it, swap them, and NEVER LOOK BACK! If you feel guilty, occasionally stuff a $20 bill in her mom's purse until you realize that what you did was nothing but merciful :D

I thought that that would work too but her mom said that it will go to a Franklin not a Waddington. Then a month later she tells me I need to start calling her mom now that I had been married to her daughter for a few years. Tell me how that makes any sence to you.

I do have an old Yamaha that is a early 70's model could do the swap with, but with my luck they would let their little sh!t son take guitar lessons with it after I restored.

Man, that's a tough situation. I'm going to be optomistic and assume you get the go-ahead to have it repaired. With that particular guitar, I wouldn't just take it downtown and have the local repair guy work on it, unless you know he is an outstanding luthier, with a lot of experience working on vintage Martins. There are not a lot of luthiers I would trust with that guitar. A pre-war D-28 is a "holy grail" instrument. You've got to have experienced hands. It's too old, too cool, and too valuable to compromise. You might want to contact Gruhn's in Nashville, Mandolin Bros in NYC, or Dan Erlewine in Athens, Ohio. Erlewine is about the best there is. I'd trust him with anything. Any well-known and respected luthier is going to be expensive, but the value of the guitar will be enhanced by their work. You (and everyone else) will know it was done right. On a Martin that old, and as abused as it has been, assume that there will be other issues in addition to the neck. And be prepared to get out your wallet :)

Re: The ignorance of some people

My wife talked to her dad just a little bit ago and he said he can't see an " old martin" being worth that much money, and he would not give her a reason why he would not let me restore it. She asked him if he had a problem with me and he said no that was not it at all. I don't understand what it is but that leaves it at that. There is pretty much nothing to I can do from here. I dont evan want to be uround right now because of this whole deal. He just acts so stupid I dont understand. He said that he didn't see how being out in his open garage could hurt it. I've done all I can so now I'll watch it go to complete hell and wait till he dies I guess.

Re: The ignorance of some people

print him some info about it so he knows what hes got.........if he sees the wealth of info on it, he can no longer deny it

Re: The ignorance of some people

can you get someone to go around and do an appraisal on it??? might help to have a professional opinion from someone outside the family....

Re: The ignorance of some people

Since this seems to be a lost cause, and there's no reasonable discussion with these people, you're left with one choice... sneak out to the garage, and smash the motherf*cker! It'll be a mercy killing, and besides... how many chances do you get to smash something worth seven grand?! :D

Re: The ignorance of some people

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Sigh. Damn JB, that's evil, but not as evil as the family Youngpup has marriend into. Nha, just kidding man. That sucks. They'd have to call the cops on me cause I'd have swiped the guitar, even if it made my wife mad. Seriously, I would have got up to take a restroom break, snuck in the garage, put it in my car, said nothing to no-one, got it worked on, and then let my wife know, one day after singing a pretty song I wrote just for her...

Re: The ignorance of some people

I starting to redefine the meaning of EVIL in my head now. I'm hoping he will think about his talk with my wife and call me tomorrow and say COME GET IT.

how about take it, love it and repair it, then take it back inside a really protective case, and place it exactly where you found it.

I dont mean to tempt you with all these evil thoughts man, but that is a dream guitar and its being killed!
Exactly what I was thinking, steal it fix and put in a proper protective casing and then give it back and say "you're welcome". It's the right thing to do :D It needs to be saved!!!!

Re: The ignorance of some people

Youngpup --> Take the damn thing!

Seriously, find a guitar that looks alike, and swap them. Seriously.

Sounds to me like you have a "Meet the Parents" type relationship with your in-laws. My advice is to take that guitar ASAP.

Dude! This line is fraught with caste-system overtones. Please take this with a grain of salt, but that guitar may be the metaphor for your marriage.

I know that if I try to fix it I will easily spend starting in the range of $500 or up. Who here would want to restore a guitar to only hand it back and never realy enjoy it. The ignorence of some people is so damned frustrating. :yell: :yell: :yell: :yell: :yell:

:offtopic: anyone know a good sniper for hire. :saeek:
