The Jeff Beck signature bend?

The Duke Of Trades
I noticed a sort of signature move JB does in "Cause We Ended As Lovers" (probably other songs as well) where he seems to pick and pull off a whole step above a given note, then bend that note up a whole step in rapid succession. When I do it, I pull off with my ring finger and bend up with only my index finger...is this correct or is there a different way? I ask because sometimes it's hard to get leverage with just one finger.

Re: The Jeff Beck signature bend?

yeah, that lick is a b!tch, aint it :D ... his fingers can bench press about 250 lbs each, i think ... it just takes massive strength through practice ... see if grabbing the neck with the left hand thumb wrapped around for leverage helps .. lighter gauge strings can help, but may effect the tone you are going for negatively ...

he also bends that note 3 half steps or more on occasion!

hope this helps
cheers

Light gauge strings are the ticket for pulling off that tune.

well...when JB recorded that stuff he was using lighter strings but no days it's 11-50's...and he still does it. He still does "Cause we've ended as lovers, and it's bad ass!!!

Sometimes, he does a similar thing, only he hammers with his right hand, then pulls off, leaving his left ring finger to finish the bend. My favorite thing he does is his atonal bends that sound like they're a microtone sharp or flat, but pulled off in a way that doesn't sound sour. To me, that's the Beck signature.

Agreed. It's intentionally just a bit sharp or flat, and it has the effect of creating tension.

Oh, yeah, the original question... Sorry. It depends where that type of lick is played on the neck. I usually do the same thing that you do, I. I pull off to my index finger and then bend up with it. If it's higher on the neck, I pull off with my ring finger to my middle finger and then bend up with my index finger behind my middle.
