Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

Wow, those are very unique. When some think of metal though they tend to think of darker imagery.

What about these:

I suppose if going by what Newstein said earlier in the thread

And of course various other 7 and 8 string models from ESP, Jackson, Dean, etc.

You seem to rarely see these (7 and 8 string guitars) kind of guitars outside a heavy music context, a shame because they can be incredibly versatile, but they definitely have a design and look in mind to appeal to guitarists on the heavier end of the spectrum

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

No, I would think most classify Yngwie as hard rock/Metal.

Anyway,
60-70's, it seemed hard rock/early "metal" guys were wielding LP's and strats. There was not a big selection of guitars and less with what we could call cooler looking shapes.

As the "image" of metal evolved more (80's), guitarist started using "cooler" looking guitars such as V's, Warlocks, explorers or strats with custom/extreme paint jobs. Any guitar shape the looked hardcore helped with the image of the band as being heavy, hardcore..etc. I would also suggest MTV had a great deal to do with furthering the metal image of that era.

These days you can almost judge the chosen music style a guitarist favors based on their weapon of choice. Certain styles of guitars seem to scream certain genres...There are always exceptions though.

I strongly considered throwing a picture of an Ibanez Universe or RG 7 string into the mix. There is no denying that those have been a mainstay for nearly two decades. They definitely look "metal."

So at this point, we have the sharper than a flying V category; Rhoads, King V, Demmolition V, ESP SV as definitely metal. The sharper than an Explorer stuff; Jackson Kelly, ESP Snakebite, B.C. Rich Mockingbird. The sharper than a Dean ML stuff like the Dean Razorback and Washburn Dime ST should be included.

Then we have the other extreme metal X shaped guitars; B.C. Rich Warlock, Warbeast, Ironbird, Stealth, Ibanez Xyphos, Jackson Warrior, and Kelly Star. I am tempted to throw the B.C. Rich Ignitor and Virgin in that category though they're not exactly X shaped.

Then we have the Ibanez Universe, RG, and RGD guitars to round it out.

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

The visuals -- body shape, paint, etc. -- are just one part of what makes a guitar metal. Any guitar can be metal when used right. Kerry King could probably make an ES-335 look metal, though it's hard to imagine someone like taylor swift using a Warlock.

And anyone who thinks newer bands don't rock need to check out Halestorm, Five Finger Death Punch, Shinedown, and Avenged Sevenfold. Those guys have some of the heaviest sounds I've ever heard, 5FDP especially. And Lzzy Hale is the Hottest Chick in Hard Rock!

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

I am huge on B.C. Rich. My friend is huge on Jackson guitars. Jackson definitely does not disappoint.

Blondie: There's a classic Metal band, eh?

A 7-string RG may or may not immediately conjure up Metal imagery in one's mind, depending on whether or not you associate it with Korn, Limp Pickle or whatever their name was, or some other "Rap Metal" group.

The vast majority of players and fans do not associate a Strat with Yngwie right off the bat. They think Clapton, Buddy Holly, or SRV.
No one confuses a Jackson Warrior with any other style of music.

And here's those pics of the USA Roswell's head and neck:

The neck had a tenon for a headstock, and the aluminum head was held on with screws.

Other than the neck and board, the whole thing was metal.

Sounded like a dobro, and weighed a ton.

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

"Rock And Roll, Hootchie Koo!"

First time I saw the BC Rich Stealth, Rick Derringer had one with Edgar Winter. While E.W. rocks, it ain't Metal.

And those ESPee "shaped" guitars make me think "WTF?" more than "Metal".

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

I have to go old school with the SG and the horns. But the Dean razorbacks are pretty metal.

Re: The most metal "looking" guitar?

It's not metal, but I would be tempted to buy the Hello Kitty squire strat, repaint the body satin black, put KISS/Black Veil Brides style face paint and fake gore and blood splatters on the hello kitty face pickguard, and a blackout metal in the bridge....

Anyway, when I think metal, I think Ibanez X-series, BC Rich, Jackson, ESP, 7 and 8 strings, and the odd Gibson (Explorers, ZW LP, etc)

Here's my metallic camo paint job for my Warrior body. Sit tight, I'll give you metal...
