'The Paul' is coming back

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I actually prefer the reissue when it comes to looks: the pickguard on the original always looked a little goofy to me. Apart from that, it looks like a great guitar, even though I don't really have a need for the middle pickup.

Oh the original pickguard is a total joke just beggin to get modded away

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

The Paul!

Straight up memories of my HS Battle of the Bands, that's the guitar my buddy Danny had.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I love "The Paul" guitars -it's a Les Paul ready for a bar show -all the fun, none of the guilt. I'm not sure what the stock pickups were -but mine had a 57 reissue in bridge by the time I got it.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

Needs a tummy cut to go with the forearm contour, then design a new straight pull headstock, give it a decent finish, have locking tuners and strap locks stock and you'd finally have a modern player's guitar

Also move the damn pickup switch to its original location or at least an SG like location

There is no need to insult anyone just because they like some of these guitars.

There's nothing wrong with LIKING them, but for $1300 you can buy a used Les Paul Traditional instead of a new remake of a $500 guitar.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I agree that they should have a tummy cut, and the headstock seems a little out of proportion. I am still astounded by the price of these.

Right. Every guitar maker's biggest competitor is their own product on the used market. This is a ridiculous guitar to try to sell when Les Paul Studio Faded models are the same thing but MORE like real Les Paul's and you can buy them used for $500 all day.

I love Gibson's products but I'm giving up on their management. Rich people don't know how to sell to average people.

Or add a couple hundred bucks and buy a new E-II Eclipse.

Amd half the price difference is the included-with-purchase hardshell.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

Over the last couple of years, there seems to have been an increase in interest in these in the used market, if internet sites are anything to go by. So this might be a good move by Gibson to try to catch that wave.

I'd personally be more inclined to buy a used original one, if I could find it, but I'm cheap and always buy used. But there are a lot of people who like buying new/being the first owner of things, and they are willing to pay more for that.

Hope one comes into one of my local shops. I have some very specific and fond memories of these in shops when I was a kid. I bet there are guys my age (50) who aren't as cheap as me who might have the same nostalgia and pick one up. I bought a crap import when I was 12 or 13 because I couldn't stretch to a Paul. But I always had a certain remorse that I wasn't patient enough to save for one. Deluxes and Standards were waaayyyyy out of my league at the time, but there was something about a "The Paul" that seemed at least theoretically in reach.

Damn. Unfulfilled longings of youth still sting!

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I really like that more than LP and would pick it up over one anytime. Looks great!

But 1399$? Bah...

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I'm confused by some of the comments about pickguards - AFAIK the original had NO pickguard, right?

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

Here's my take on it: the originals play quite well and sound surprisingly massive for a thin body guitar, nothing like an SG or even a Special.IMO the reissues are definitely overpriced.

It's not so much about the walnut, what makes the originals such a good sleeper deal is the real ebony board, long tenon neck and T-tops. None of which are present on the reissues.

Gibson M-III offtopic tangent, not The Paul

The Paul, A.K.A. a study in how to uglify a beautiful, classy, timeless looking Les Paul Special in order to get it in line with hideous late '70's fashion.

Eh… I don't think anybody buying this is going to be after 'real Les Paul's [sic]', as you call them. That is the Achilles heel of your analysis. In fact, if Gibson wants to avoid competing with their own used market, I would argue that this is probably one of the smarter models they could have reissued, since it has a vintage cool of its own and a cadre of devotees (just look at this thread!), yet it is relatively uncommon on the used market: there are currently three on Reverb, with the cheapest one clocking in at about 800$ before shipping and taxes. Once you stop looking at the fictional retail price and look at what the actual prices, the whole thing seems a lot more reasonable.

What is going to make this float or sink in my opinion is the build quality: will Gibson be able to make their instruments more consistent out of the factory? If the change in leadership can turn around the company and make their guitars more consistent, I don't think this is going to be the worst thing they could have done.

Good points, sure, but you can still buy a vintage The Paul for less than this reissue, so the reissue is still stupid.
