Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

OK. All of my five are in the top 24. I guess that means I'm old and incredibly mainstream, predictable, and normal.

I really hate being normal.

Nonetheless, it's an interesting list, Keith. Thanks!

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Wow! Joe Strummer didn't make it ?

Did no one here grow up listening, being moved, and inspired not just musically but as a human being by the only band that mattered, The Clash ?

No disrespect to some other players on there but come on, what exactly did Marty Friedman contribute to the world ? lol

Millsart, meet the rest of the forum.

I love the Clash too, and could easily think of about thirty great players who didn't make the list that I'd sub for Friedman, but there's a big 80s/metal/shred contingent on this forum, and friedman's presence reflects that.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

My #1 made #10 that's pretty sweet! That's a pretty kool list right there.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

One thing's for sure - we have a lot better taste than Rolling Stone. :laugh2:

Two out of five. I really do have a twisted taste in music. I'm not at all surprised Pitrelli and Felder didn't make the cut.

That's higher than I thought he'd be to be totally honest. Glad to see I'm not the only fan. :)

You should have known I'd vote for him!

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Both Blackmore and Schenker way in front of Malmsteen. This is why this forum is ahead of others :D

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Great job Keith, you got me hook, line and sinker - that whole Brad Delson thing never clicked :D :fing2:

I was gonna say, falk you all for being Zakk Wylde fans :p That guy is worthless, every other note is a pinch harmonic... bloody tool.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

You got that right!

EVH at #70? Gilmour at #82? Iommi at #86?

PUH-LEEEZE!!!!

Just goes to show the differences between players and non-players.

there's nothing wrong with either list, it's just very different perspectives.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

um, guys...

I've just noticed one weirdness.

No Keith Richards.

Now THAT is really surprising.

Yeah, I know. You don't want to know what his rank is on our list. It's horrifyingly unfair. Of course, I'm as much to blame as anyone else, since he wasn't in my top five.

Naah. I think Rolling Stone's list is empirically flawed. I have to say, I think our list is quite excellent.

well, I'm not doubting the excellence of our list, but I'm unsure as to why RS's list is empirically flawed. How did they put it together?

Seems to me they got drunk one night, wrote names on a bunch o' darts, and chucked 'em at a dartboard.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

It does read like an editorial staff-created poll, but to be honest I could imagine RS readers coming up with a similar list. though the ordering may be a bit different. Duane at #2 is interesting, if not undeserved.

Dude, that list is an illustration of how non-players think about guitarists. Our poll is a classic, almost cliche example of how guitarists think about guitarists.

I like both lists, personally. My top 100 would take names from both.

None of my top five made the list and I'm neither surprised nor angry. I can't say I'm shocked by that list and there are some great players on there. Kudos to the viking for doing all of this. Must have been a lot of work.

But I must confess, I really wish the April fools list was in actuality the real one. Not because any of my favorites were on the fake one (I think favorites are rather personal and it isn't important who inspires you, but rather that someone inspires you) but rather because I like to see people get unraveled when silly norms are upset.

For the most part, I don't take exception to the guitarists on the RS list, only their rankings.

I do agree with you that ours is a guitarist's list, while the RS list is a listener's list. The RS list also includes some historic icons that ours omits, since ours is about personal favorites rather than historic importance.

Great list, Keith! Thanks so much for doing this.

I got all my guys in: Adrian Smith, Iommi, Jeff Beck, Schenker and Rhoads.
