Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

There's a special place in @&$) for people who need to burn things. Don't burn anything! Matter can't be created nor destroyed. I think the Les Paul is overrated. No cut outs. No thir pickup. Sounds bad with a tremolo. Bad bridge design. Weighs too much. Bad neck, it always breaks. Humbuckers can be inarticulate. Too many controls. Come to think of it it's so flawed it's great.

The Gibson ES-335!

Just becasue Black Blues players finanlly wrere able to afford an entry level Gibson Semi Hollow, and made that guitar sound famous, the squadrons of no-nothing guitar dorks like you guys chime in harmony like a bunch of Bullfrogs in the Mud with an adulating chorus; "335!"
What they don't know is the 335 is a Plywood guitar, thats right, PLYWOOD!
On top of that, its a cheap glued top.
I really hate to say this, cause I know so much more about Gibsons than you'll ever know, but there are models not that much more expensive that are one solid piece of carved mahogany...in fact, the whole great guitar is one solid piece of wood, and the semi hollow chambers are carved out of that solid block!
I hate to say that cause now some heretofore clueless self important boneheads with money here will now go researching and looking for these guitars that I am trying to find, but ah well, all in the name of progress.
Basically its like people arguing that silverface Fender is a good amp.
No it sin't.

Great minds always face criticism from mediocre minds, like I always do here, so flame away again! I'm sitting pretty knowing I'm right..I'm ALWAYS right!

This actually explains a lot. I have always loved how the 335 looks. I've played a few I would consider adding to my arsenal, and a whole lot more that sound gawdawful. When I was shopping for my first serious axe it was between a 335 and a strat based on the type of gigs I was looking for, and the strat got the sound I was looking for FROM THE 335 better than the 335 could do it, plus it was a strat and could do all that strat stuff. In the end, I am a solidbody player through and through.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

Every solid body guitar ever made is horrendously overrated. You pay for fretwork, the rest of the guitar is changeable, the body is almost insignificant to tone IMO (unless the placebo effect is so strong on you).

Best way to improve tone is to practice and really learn how to play cool stuff, study music seriously, or get a degree. Besides that, an awesome acoustic or semi-hollow with seth lovers, or a full hollow sadowsky are the true champions of tone when the guitar is the only variable being considered. IMO!!!! I only love my strat because the neck i bought for it is AMAZING, the frets are permanent and AMAZING (STAINLESS!), and the body is very moddable and basically indestructable unless im being absolutely retarded (even then the strat can handle getting dropped unlike an LP that is bent headstock, set neck etc.)

This is just one of my 'LEARN HOW TO PLAY' and gear wont be a big deal if the action/intonation/pickups are right. That's why I love this forum, it has helped me get those 3 things right to the point that i love plugging my strat into anything.

I think I am not the only one who will seriously dispute the notion that solid bodies all sound the same, given the same guts. It isn't a placebo effect that a longer scale legnth seriously changes your tone, and neither is the acoustic effect body shape and composition have on your tone, especially if you are like me and tend to live in a "black panel Fender amp cranked to 7" world. My Strat and my SG sound worlds different unplugged, and the ways they sound different plugged in have a relationship to that.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

No man, like the sticker at the store says, "FOR TOBACCO USE ONLY." It's obviously a water pipe for a cleaner way to smoke tobacco than cigarettes.

^ yes, yes it is. And this thread sounds like another ed roman rag

I like 335s, but i would never own one since playing one makes me feel like i should be playing doowops with another guitarist that owns a sea-foam green strat

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

A lot of great music has been recorded on 335s and it's siblings, thats for certain. To be honest though I really don't care for the body shape. It's just not my thing. That also applies to it's hollow cousin the 330. Just not my thing.

On another note: I am amazed by the number of high end hollow or semi-hollow guitars that are made from laminate woods. Metheny and Bensons' guitars are made from laminates as well.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

Must.... buy.... 335.... in.... red.... .... *drool*

I will sell some shredsticks with EMGs to get it too...

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

personally, I believe the most overrated guitar is the Les Paul.

its too heavy, badly balanced, only has 1 decent tone, has the biggest handfull of wood when you play past the 14th fret. the headstocks snap with the least bump.
the body edges are too square and hurt your forearm. the controls are laid out horribly.
they cost too much, they are expensive to repair correctly. and the design is now 60 years old and there are MUCH better designs out there now.

and being as the 335 shares quite a few of those traits.. then yeah, lets lump it in there a well. in fact, you can just about throw the whole Gibson catalog on the pile.
they really are outdated guitars.

but thats only my opinion.. and don't let the fact that I once worked for Gibson and used to hear all the employees say these very same things all day long.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

You p33ps are funny!

Unca Jer has been posting for years, and some of you STILL don't get him.:chairfall

This is despite the fact that he even admits to posting this thread to get a rise out of you! :lmao:

Then again, considering how butt-hurt some of you got over my tease at FB narcissism, this shouldn't be a surprise.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

So ... I'm confused about this issue now .... should i stop setting fire to 335's in Melbourne music stores, or should I keep going ? (There's still quite a few stores I haven't visited yet)

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

I'm surprised your not geting a bunch of F-U's from all the gibson lovers on this forum. my first guitar was a gibson explorer and for hang it low and slam power chords it was great with that mahogany body. I got it becouse for the simple tone it had both the clean and dirty it was easy to get those 2 good tones out of it. In the end though, I realy wanted to expand to a strat style to get somthing more veratile. I think its the same with the 335. People who play them tend to love the tones it can get. I played a Setzer Gretsch with a bigsby and loved it way more then a 335. I bought it and I am not sorry I did ether. Is it made in America? Nope its not but I got it becouse it plays well and I love all the tones it gets. Its much more versatile then a one or two trick pony 335. If you dig the 335 you'll swear by the simple tones it gets. I just wanted somthing alot more versitile like a guitar that can do several styles for that kind of money and thats why I went with the Gretsch. I also now play strats for versitility of tone. I have a couple with 2 hums but they are switched 5 ways one with floyd, one with fender trem, and I get more versitle tone from them. Maybe alot of that price is due to the whole.....American made thing.....but have you noticed latley that Fender and others are puting out alot of semi hollow guitars that sound about as good as a 335 and play great for alot less money. :scratchch

How old does a thread have to be to qualify for Necromancy?
