The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

A friend of mine built this tone machine and it is awesome. At first I didn’t get his whole concept but after playing the guitar I am blown away. This strat can dial up any tone you want. He was inspired by Steve Morse’s “Rock and Roll” guitar.

He started off with stock Fender pickups and swapped out the magnets. There is a A3 in the bridge, A8 in the middle and a neodymium in the neck. As you can see he added a DiMarzio Super Distortion to the guitar but it is modded to vintage specs with an oversized unoriented ceramic magnet.

The switching is cool. There is a three way selector switch for the single coils. The next is an on and off switch for the SD which bypasses the volume and tone and is wired straight to the output jack. There is a coil tap for the SD and a phase switch. The next switch is a phase for the single coils the last one is a bypass for the bridge pickup that wires it directly to the jack.

I wasn’t sure about what he was doing at first but after playing it this guitar is a serious tone machine.

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

that is pretty daring.

where I can buy this bass guitar?

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

That looks cool.

Wonder if I could shoehorn a setup like that in my new 339? It also needs a trem.

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

Can you post a schematic for the switching? I have a Jim Root strat and can't stand the emg's. This looks like a cool setup to try.

How does the A8 sound with the A3?

That was one of my favorite settings especially out of phase. Probably one of the best blues tones I have ever heard. The A3 with the ceramic was mind blowing. Want to talk about capturing a classic vibe. He did detail the schematics I just emailed him for them. I will post them if he says its cool.

Thanks, man. I look forward to it.

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

yeah jokes aside, I would like to see these schematics too. with that many switches, it must be something crazy/cool.

CTN,

This Kahler dude you mentioned - Can he fit that setup in my 339? Can he relic my guitar?

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

i was joking around man. gary kahler would probably only want to sell you a trem unit.

let's wait to see what bruce comes up with for that schematic, and then if it's feasible perhaps you could do it yourself!

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

He sent it over but he said the schematic wasn't done yet. He is still labeling it.

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

whoa man. he's got tubes in there under the hood?!

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

Pretty cool althought the switches look a tab messy.

i have a bypass switch on two of my guitars. i Like that idea.

Re: The Ultimate in Tone Versatility

I think I could do that to LesStrat with little extra effort!

:cool3: idea!
